Atithi (“The Guest”), by Rabindranath Tagore, is studied in ISC Class XII through the Prism short-story collection. Its central conflict is between Tarapada’s longing for movement and the unexplored and the affection and domestic future offered by Motilal Babu’s family. His departure gives students a clear way to discuss freedom, nature, relationships and the meaning of the title.

Atithi summary

Tarapada is a wandering boy who joins Motilal Babu on a boat journey. He becomes a welcome presence in Motilal Babu’s household, where he meets Motilal Babu, his wife Annapurna and their daughter Charushashi. Each develops a different relationship with him, and his stay allows affection and emotional ties to grow.

The household’s hopes turn toward making Tarapada part of its settled future, including through a marriage arrangement. But Tarapada leaves rather than accept a permanent tie. His departure is consistent with the restless impulse that brought him into the family’s life: he is drawn toward freedom and what remains unexplored, even when he is welcomed and cared for.

What is the central theme of Atithi?

Freedom and attachment

The story sets the family’s affection against Tarapada’s unwillingness to settle. Being welcomed does not mean he chooses permanence. The conflict is not simply that the family cares for him; it is that their hopes for a lasting bond differ from his impulse to remain free.

The quest for the unknown

CISCE’s official practice material asks what Tarapada’s “constant longing to discover the unexplored” highlights and identifies the thematic direction as “man’s quest for the unknown.” This is a useful thesis for an exam answer: show how his arrival, time with the family and eventual departure express that longing, rather than merely repeating the plot.

Nature and movement

CISCE’s 2025 examiner guidance recommends exploring Tagore’s philosophy of oneness with nature as a theme in Atithi. Treat this as an interpretive lens: connect the story’s nature imagery and events to Tarapada’s movement and freedom, and explain how they develop your reading. Avoid making broad claims about Tagore’s beliefs beyond what the prescribed story supports.

The title: “The Guest”

Atithi means “guest.” Tarapada is welcomed into the household, but his stay remains temporary: he leaves when the family’s hopes move toward a settled domestic bond. The title therefore supports a reading of guesthood as belonging without permanent membership. Ground that interpretation in the events and ending of the assigned text.

Characters and relationships

  • Tarapada: His wandering nature and desire for the unexplored drive the story’s conflict. CISCE’s 2025 material describes him as “a free spirit who refused to be tied down by any social and emotional bonds.” Use the story’s events to explain this characterization.
  • Motilal Babu and Annapurna: Their household offers Tarapada welcome and affection. Their wish to retain him makes the prospect of a permanent domestic place tangible.
  • Charushashi: Her relationship with Tarapada adds emotional complexity and is connected to the family’s marriage plans. Support claims about her character with specific episodes from the full story rather than relying on a general label.

When a question asks about the relationships Tarapada resists, consider the family’s different perspectives. CISCE examiner commentary warns that some candidates focused on Annapurna or Charushashi at the expense of other relevant characters.

How to prepare ISC answers

Answer the precise question first. CISCE examiner guidance notes that some candidates wrote a summary instead of addressing what was asked. Keep plot sequence brief, then explain what the selected event shows about character or theme.

For a short analytical answer

  1. State the point directly, such as what Tarapada’s longing suggests.
  2. Refer to one relevant event from the story.
  3. Explain how that event supports your interpretation.

For a longer response

  1. Open with a thesis that answers the prompt.
  2. Select a few relevant episodes, such as Tarapada’s arrival, his relationships in the household and his departure.
  3. Explain how each episode develops the question’s focus—freedom, nature, attachment or guesthood.
  4. Link the ending to your argument without retelling the whole story.

Official ISC material uses approximately 100–150 words for some analytical answers and approximately 250 words for the long Atithi prompt. Follow the word limit stated in your own question. If asked about a relationship, address both people’s roles instead of allowing one character to dominate the response.

Useful exam question angles

  • How does Tarapada’s longing to discover the unexplored express the quest for the unknown?
  • Why can Tarapada not be bound by the household’s relationships?
  • How does the story contrast nature and movement with social permanence?
  • How does the ending support the title Atithi?

These are study angles, not substitutes for the exact wording of an exam question. Build each response from the prescribed story and explain how the evidence supports your answer.
