Ata Thambaycha Naay! turns an extraordinary education initiative into a warm, workaday story about municipal sanitation workers trying to finish school without putting their jobs or family responsibilities aside. Scroll reports that the film draws on a 2017 effort in which Assistant Municipal Commissioner Udaykumar Shirurkar encouraged 23 workers to complete their basic education; the film’s larger story is presented as based on a true incident, not as a scene-by-scene historical record.
A schoolroom story built around the working day
Directed by Shivraj Waichal, this 2025 Marathi drama-comedy follows Mumbai municipal workers who are asked to return to education while continuing demanding jobs. ZEE5’s synopsis identifies Assistant Municipal Commissioner Uday Kumar Shirurkar as the official who selects the employees. The workers first worry that the initiative may threaten their employment; they then learn they are expected to study for their 10th-grade education, attending night classes taught by Nilesh Mali.

The premise gets its emotional force from the collision between aspiration and exhaustion. The students are not free to treat school as a fresh start detached from the rest of life: shifts, money worries and personal responsibilities remain in place. IFFI’s synopsis likewise describes workers in their 40s and 50s preparing for 10th-standard exams amid demanding jobs, family duties and social ridicule.
How closely is the film based on real events?
The film is described by ZEE5 and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) as based on a true story or incident. Scroll’s review supplies a specific historical detail: it reports that Shirurkar’s 2017 initiative encouraged 23 workers to complete basic school education. That figure belongs to Scroll’s reporting; the available material does not establish it through an original BMC record. The real-life connection is a foundation for the film, but its scenes and characters should not be treated as independently verified documentary history.

The film’s best grounding is its attention to the jobs themselves. In Nandini Ramnath’s review for Scroll, Maruti is a pipe-fixer who also drives a taxi; Apsara and Jayshree sweep streets and empty bins; and Sakharam works in drains at risk to his health. Their employment is not merely the obstacle that keeps them from class. It shapes their bodies, time, finances and sense of what is possible.
Ramnath also notes that the film was shot in actual Mumbai chawls and slums and does not look away from the city’s garbage problem. Those surroundings keep the story from becoming an abstract lesson in perseverance. The city’s visible conditions and the workers’ labor remain part of the story even as the classroom offers a glimpse of another future.
Performances and characters that feel individual
Ramnath praises the film for giving its students distinct lives rather than reducing them to inspirational types. That choice matters in a story with a clear uplifting purpose: education and dignity of labor are stronger themes when the characters remain people with differing pressures, habits and relationships, not examples arranged to deliver a message.
Her review singles out Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Jadhav, Kiran Khoje and Ashutosh Gowariker for their performances. The credited cast also includes Om Bhutkar, Parna Pethe, Prajakta Hanamghar, Pravin Dalimbkar and Rohini Hattangadi. Scroll credits the screenplay to Waichal, Omkar Gokhale and Arvind Jagtap; IFFI renders Gokhale’s surname as “Gokhle,” so consult the film’s end credits if exact spelling is essential.

Where the film’s optimism becomes overextended
The praise comes with a real qualification. Ramnath argues that the film elides the caste system that governs municipal workers’ employment. Its emphasis on education and dignity of labor is progressive, but, in her assessment, the messaging is pushed too far. That omission leaves an important structural dimension of the workers’ lives outside the film’s frame.
She also finds the romantic subplot and the film’s length work against its momentum. ZEE5 lists the runtime as 2 hours 18 minutes, or 138 minutes; Scroll describes the film as 144 minutes. The sources differ on the runtime, so neither figure should be treated as definitive here. Ramnath’s broader point is that judicious editing could make the film punchier, particularly where the subplot and repeated messaging extend its emotional beats.
Who should watch Ata Thambaycha Naay!
This is a good fit for viewers who want an uplifting Marathi ensemble drama with its attention fixed on working people, their education and the city around them. It is less suited to someone looking for a tightly paced account of the real initiative or a film that fully examines the social structures shaping sanitation work. Its strongest achievement is to make an apparently improbable return to school feel connected to ordinary pressures rather than detached from them.
