The arrests were reported in early October 2025; investigators later added a murder section to the case. These are procedural developments, not findings of guilt.
Who was arrested, and where?
Assam CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested Sharma and Mahanta as part of its probe into Garg’s death. Hindustan Times reported on October 1, 2025, that Mahanta was detained at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after arriving from Singapore, while Sharma was apprehended in Gurugram. Both were taken to Guwahati and produced before a magistrate, who granted 14 days of police custody, according to The Indian Express and Hindustan Times.
What offences were reported?
Initial reporting said the case included allegations of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence. On October 2, 2025, CID Special DGP M P Gupta, who headed the SIT, said that Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the murder provision, had been added. Gupta said: “Section 103 has been added to this case but at this moment, I cannot say more in this matter.” The addition of an offence is an investigative and legal step; it does not establish that either man committed it.
What is known about Garg’s death?
Garg died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, while there for the North East India Festival. The Indian Express reported that he lost consciousness while swimming during a yacht outing and that Singapore death certificates recorded drowning as the cause of death. The same report said Singapore police had ruled out foul play, citing a statement reported by The Straits Times. Those accounts describe the Singapore authorities’ findings; they are distinct from the allegations being investigated by Assam Police.

What happened after the arrests?
A later Akashvani News report said the SIT submitted a 3,500-page chargesheet to the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Guwahati. The available report did not state when it was filed or disclose its contents, so that figure alone does not establish the case’s current court status or what evidence it contains.
At the time of the arrests, Assam Police DGP Harmeet Singh urged the public not to speculate. Hindustan Times quoted him on October 1, 2025: “Investigation is a legal process and if it’s not scientifically done, it won’t lead to justice. I urge all to avoid speculations. Have belief and faith in us and let us do our work.”
