Who is Ashtray to Fez?
Ashtray is Fez’s younger brother by upbringing, not by blood. Fez’s grandmother took him in after a customer left him behind, and Fez later became his caretaker. The brothers grew close and worked together, so their family bond and criminal partnership became intertwined. Complex’s January 21, 2022 interview with Walton and NYLON’s account of his backstory describe that history.

Why does Ashtray seem so much older than he is?
Toughness as a role—and a consequence
Ashtray is quiet, capable and hardened, but those traits do not erase the child beneath them. His early life includes abandonment and violence; Fez becomes his primary caretaker. One way to read Ashtray’s self-sufficiency is as an adaptation to having too little protection, rather than proof that he is unaffected by what happens to him.
Walton described the vulnerability that occasionally breaks through the character’s composure: “He doesn’t show it that often but when he does, it’s noticeable that he’s a kid.” In an Entertainment Tonight interview published February 28, 2022, Walton also called the finale Ashtray’s breaking point: “He really snapped in the last episode. That was his breaking point.”

Loyalty that carries a cost
Ashtray’s loyalty to Fez is protective, but it is not separate from the danger surrounding them. Their closeness draws Ashtray into the same criminal world that threatens the family he is trying to defend. That tension gives his choices their force: protecting Fez and participating in violence become difficult to untangle. This is an interpretation of the reported story events, not a confirmed statement of the writers’ intent.
Is Ashtray dead in Euphoria?
The season 2 finale strongly implies that Ashtray dies. In NYLON’s recap, he stabs Custer, kills a police officer and appears to take a fatal bullet during the ensuing confrontation. That is the episode’s apparent outcome; Walton’s comments do not establish a later canonical reversal.

Walton nevertheless left room for viewers to wonder. He noted that the episode does not show Ashtray in a pool of blood, saying: “It’s kind of just left up to mystery because honestly, if somebody could take a bullet, it’s definitely Ashtray.” That is the actor’s speculation, not confirmation that Ashtray survived. NYLON’s interview and finale coverage, originally published March 1, 2022 and updated February 20, 2024, reports both the scene and Walton’s uncertainty.

Ashtray’s story places childhood vulnerability beside an adult role imposed by circumstance. Fez gives him a family, but their shared life also exposes him to violence. In the finale, the impulse to protect that family collides with the danger their world has brought to their door. The tragedy lies in that contradiction: Ashtray’s fierce capability is part of what makes him seem able to survive, while his vulnerability reminds viewers that he is still a child.
