In a 2018 interview with Scroll, singer Armaan Malik looked back on the early work that brought him into the music business and described a close, demanding creative partnership with his older brother, composer Amaal Mallik. Malik was 23 when the profile appeared; its career figures and ambitions are a snapshot of that moment, not an update on his present-day career.
How did Armaan Malik get his start in music?
Malik told Scroll interviewer Devarsi Ghosh that his mother encouraged him to pursue singing professionally. She helped him prepare a demo and went with him to approach production houses and composers. In his account, the first steps were practical: recording work, auditions and repeated attempts to get heard.
He recalled recording jingles from age nine and dubbing for My Name Is Khan. He also said he had recorded at least 200 jingles in eight or nine languages by the time of the interview, work he credited with helping him pick up languages. Those are figures and recollections from the August 6, 2018 profile, not a current tally.
Did coming from the Malik family help?
Asked about family connections, Malik did not describe them as a shortcut. He said he was rejected in the final round of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs, and recalled that a song he recorded for Bhoothnath was initially replaced. Those examples are his account in the interview; the profile does not independently establish how family ties affected his opportunities.

Malik also recounted that he released an album titled Armaan, after which Salman Khan heard its songs and liked one for Jai Ho. Malik said the film led to three songs for him, including “Tumko To Aana Hi Tha,” which the profile identifies as his breakthrough. He also discussed moving from Universal to T-Series; the contract and career account are presented as he described them in 2018.

Which songs marked his early rise?
The Scroll profile traces Malik’s growing recognition through a run of film and non-film songs. Malik singled out “Tumhe Apna Banane Ka” as the song that brought him popularity. He said “Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon” earned him respect from the industry and listeners. Those are his assessments, rather than independent measures of either song’s reach.
The interview also names “Naina,” “Besabriyaan” and “Ghar Se Nikalte Hi” among the songs associated with this phase of his career. Taken together with his work in Jai Ho, they show how the 2018 profile framed his rise through a succession of recordings rather than a single turning point.

How did Armaan and Amaal work together?
Malik described a contrast in temperament: he considered himself calm and Amaal more hot-headed. But he framed their arguments as part of the effort to improve a song, not as a lasting rift. In studio work, he said, Amaal could be exacting—especially when directing Armaan’s vocals—and would have him repeat a part until it sounded right.
Their collaboration also extended beyond Amaal composing and Armaan singing. On MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Malik said he sang four songs, played some guitar parts and did some programming. He described the process as lasting about a year and said the soundtrack was Amaal’s first film as a solo composer. This is Malik’s account of their contributions and the project’s timeline.
