Arijit Singh said he would stop accepting new assignments as a playback vocalist—not stop making music. He also said he would finish existing commitments, so songs recorded or signed before the announcement could still be released afterward. In other words, this is an end to new playback work as he described it, not a retirement from music altogether.
What Arijit Singh announced
In a post on his Instagram account, reported by India Today on January 27, 2026 (the report was updated January 28), Singh said he would no longer take new assignments as a playback vocalist. His statement began:

“I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”
Playback singing is when a singer records vocals for use in a film or other production, often with an actor lip-syncing on screen. Singh’s announcement concerns taking on new work in that role. It does not say he will stop singing, recording music, or performing altogether.

What his full statement says about pending songs
Singh addressed existing work in the same post:
“I still have to finish some pending commitments , will finish them. So you might get some releases this year. Just to be clear that I won’t stop making music.”
The wording matters: he said he had commitments to finish and that listeners might get releases, not that every pending song had a confirmed release date. The statement also directly rules out the broadest interpretation of “retirement”: Singh said he would not stop making music.

What he told listeners in February 2026
In a follow-up message addressed to listeners on February 24, reported by NDTV, and covered by India Today on February 25, Singh said he had stopped accepting new assignments but still had many recorded and signed songs left to complete. The reports said he expected releases to continue through 2026 and possibly into 2027. That was an expectation expressed at the time, not a guaranteed schedule or confirmation of any particular track.
India Today reproduced the opening of his note as: “This message is just for my listeners Hello beautiful people!” He thanked listeners and described unfinished songs as continuing to come out “until done.” The reports did not give a number of pending songs, so there is no confirmed count for fans to track.

In remarks reported by The Times of India on January 28, 2026, Singh said there was not a single reason for the decision and that he had been trying to make the change for a long time. He described becoming bored with repeating arrangements and wanting to explore other music:
“One of the reasons were simple, I get bored pretty quick, that’s why I keep changing arrangements of the same songs and perform them on stage. So here is the thing, I got bored.”

“I need to do some other music to live.”
He also said he was excited to hear a new singer give him genuine motivation. In the same reported remarks, he described a possible direction for his work: “I am going to go back to Indian classical music. I wanna go back to making music. I wanna start again.” These are Singh’s stated reasons and intentions, not an assurance of a particular project or timetable.
What fans should—and should not—expect
- Existing songs may still arrive: Singh said he would complete pending commitments, and in February described recorded and signed songs still to finish.
- There is no confirmed release calendar in these reports: the possibility of releases through 2026 and into 2027 was an expectation reported after his February message, not a promise of dates or specific titles.
- New playback assignments are the work he said he would stop taking: the announcement does not establish that he will never sing for films again, nor does it announce an end to all singing or music-making.
- His stated creative focus may change: he spoke about making other music and returning to Indian classical music, without specifying a definitive plan.
The career context in brief
NDTV reported that Singh appeared on the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005 and made his Hindi-film debut with “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2 in 2011. That background helps explain why the announcement is significant for film-music listeners, but its scope remains specific: Singh is stepping away from new playback assignments while saying he will continue making music.
