Her comments, reported by ELLE on February 11, 2025, did not confirm a romance between the actors. They addressed two different subjects: speculation about real people and fan readings of fictional characters.
What Ariana Grande said about the rumors
In ELLE’s February 11, 2025 report, Grande said, “People think we’re secretly married.” She was referring to rumors about herself and Erivo, not announcing that they were in a relationship.
Grande also discussed fan material interpreting Glinda and Elphaba as romantically involved. ELLE quoted her saying, “I wish I could unsee some things,” and: “I mean, wow, I had a feeling, but I didn’t know it would be on this scale or this graphic.” Her surprise concerned the scale and graphic nature of some fan content; it was not a statement that the characters’ relationship had been confirmed as romantic.
Two different “Wicked” love-story discussions
| Subject | What people are discussing | What the comments establish |
|---|---|---|
| Grande and Erivo | Real-person rumors, including speculation that they were secretly married. | Grande acknowledged the rumors. The report does not verify a romantic relationship between them. |
| Glinda and Elphaba | A fan interpretation, often called “Gelphie,” that the fictional characters are romantically involved. | Grande acknowledged encountering fan material, including some she found unexpectedly graphic. That reaction does not establish a canonical romance. |
Keeping the subjects separate matters: comments about the actors’ friendship are not evidence about the characters’ story, and fan interpretation of the characters does not establish anything about the actors’ private lives.

Why audiences read Glinda and Elphaba’s story as queer
Wicked is a musical prequel to The Wizard of Oz, following Glinda and Elphaba before Dorothy arrives. Its intense bond between two women has prompted audiences to read the story through a queer lens. In a 2024 Vanity Fair profile, original Glinda actor Kristin Chenoweth described the musical as “the love story between two girls,” highlighting her interpretation of its themes. That is a characterization of the story, not proof that the characters are canonically a couple.
Grande also spoke about the film’s LGBTQ resonance in a separate 2024 interview with Attitude, in a discussion of young LGBTQ people facing rejection. She spoke about chosen family and said, “Oz is so full of queerness and celebration and beautiful differences – and so is Earth.” Those remarks frame the story as welcoming to queer audiences, but they were not her response to the later rumors.

What Cynthia Erivo said later about their friendship
In separate coverage published by ELLE on February 15, 2026, Erivo reflected on public assumptions about her closeness with Grande. She said, “At first, I think people didn’t understand how it was possible for two women to be friends—close—and not lovers.” Erivo described a “strange fascination” and noted the limited public conversation about deep, real platonic friendship between women. These are Erivo’s reflections, reported separately from Grande’s 2025 comments.
A 2026 Variety Australia profile offers another distinct context: Erivo said she and Jonathan Bailey had discussed playing ostensibly straight characters as queer actors while telling a story of love and closeness. That concerns their approach to character work and representation, not Grande and Erivo’s personal relationship.

How Grande described the effect of rumor coverage
In the same 2025 ELLE report, Grande said tabloid rumors and misinformation would “never be unpainful.” She also described trying to protect herself so she would not begin to resent her art. In discussing fame, she characterized the pop-star image as a character and said parts of a person’s story can become sensationalized and get away from them. That perspective helps explain why acknowledging a rumor should not be mistaken for endorsing it.
