Argentine fitness instructor Santiago Bourdieum, 28, died after jumping from Spitting Cave on Oahu on Saturday, February 8, 2025, according to news reports published the following week. The accounts say he hit the water, did not resurface, and was rescued before later dying in hospital. They do not establish an official cause of death.
What happened at Spitting Cave
The Inertia reported that Bourdieum jumped from the cliffs at Spitting Cave, struck the water, and did not resurface. PerthNow’s February 14 report places the incident on the preceding Saturday, matching The Inertia’s date of February 8.
The reports describe a rescue effort in rough water. PerthNow says a friend entered the water to search for Bourdieum, lifeguards searched, and he was brought ashore, where CPR was performed. The Inertia says Honolulu Ocean Safety and the Honolulu Fire Department arrived on jet skis, found him, and brought him ashore for first aid. The accounts say he later died in hospital; they are media reports, not a directly reviewed agency incident record.

News accounts identify Bourdieum as a 28-year-old Argentine fitness instructor and rugby player. PerthNow additionally describes him as a gym teacher at Buenos Aires St Nicholas’ School. These biographical details are attributed to the reports.

What is known about the cause of death
The reports reviewed say Bourdieum died after the rescue and hospital treatment, but they do not establish an official medical cause of death. The sequence described by news outlets should not be treated as an official finding about how he died.
Safety warnings cited in the reports
PerthNow identifies Brian Lauro as a Honolulu Ocean Safety official and quotes him warning that the rock shelves and water conditions at the site can be hazardous. He said a wet shelf can make a person slide into the water and struggle to get back out. He also warned against jumping when the water is foamy, describing foam as having negative buoyancy.

Lauro cautioned that swimming in pools, lakes, or quarries does not qualify someone to jump at this site. The warning is specific to the conditions described in the report; it is not evidence that swimming ability, fitness, or prior experience makes a cliff jump safe.
Reported cliff-jumping incident count
The Inertia relayed a KHON2 report that Honolulu Ocean Safety responded to 52 cliff-jumping-related injuries, drownings, and near-drownings over five years. This is a figure reported secondhand by The Inertia, not an independently verified count from agency records.
