If you mean the fish shown swimming together in the film, schooling is coordinated group movement—but the title alone does not identify a particular scene or species. Clownfish living in small groups around anemones is not the same as synchronized open-water schooling.
What does “Nemo tuna” mean?
The phrase is ambiguous rather than the name of a fish species. Disney/Pixar depicts Nemo as a clownfish. Its 2016 educational packet says, “Clownfish live in small groups in anemones which are a type of animal.” The packet gives clownfish a size range of 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) and says females can lay 100–1,000 eggs per clutch. Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory Activity Packet (2016)
Small groups around an anemone should not be confused with a school moving in coordination through open water. Tuna are a different kind of fish; the wording does not establish that a particular tuna, or even a particular scene, is meant. An educational Finding Nemo 3D Study Guide distinguishes pelagic fish such as tuna from reef settings, but it does not identify the fish in an unspecified scene.
What is schooling, and why do fish do it?
Schooling is coordinated group movement: fish adjust their movement in relation to nearby fish rather than simply occupying the same area. A 2023 review discusses several potential advantages, including protection from predators, more efficient feeding, and endurance. Hydrodynamic interactions—how swimming fish affect the water around one another—may also help make coordinated swimming more efficient. These are possible benefits across fish and contexts, not a single explanation that applies to every school.

Schooling therefore describes behavior, not a species label. Seeing fish together does not by itself show why they are grouped, or whether their movement is synchronized. For the broader evidence and its limits, see the 2023 review, “A comprehensive review of hydrodynamic studies on fish schooling” by Montana Ligman, Joshua Lund, and Mirjam Fürth.
How can a school coordinate its movement?
Coordination can arise through interactions among individual fish; it need not mean that every animal follows a single leader. A 2026 University of California San Diego report describes research on micro glassfish (Danionella cerebrum) in which individuals copied neighbors’ movements to align within schools. That is a specific finding about the glassfish studied, not proof that clownfish or tuna coordinate in the same way. Read the UC San Diego report, “Rules of the School” (2026).

How should the film imagery be interpreted?
Keep the distinction clear: Nemo is a clownfish character; clownfish are described in Disney/Pixar’s educational material as living in small groups in anemones; and schooling refers to coordinated group movement. Those facts do not establish that Nemo is a tuna or that clownfish, tuna, and micro glassfish share identical social behavior. Without a specific scene or fish identified, it is not possible to say which fish are shown or why they are moving together.
