Lucy Dacus confirmed in a March 17, 2025, New Yorker profile that she and Julien Baker are in a committed relationship. Dacus has described the challenge not as rejecting fans, but as protecting parts of her life while making honest, intimate art.
Are Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker dating?
Yes. Dacus confirmed the relationship in the New Yorker profile published March 17, 2025. The pair had mostly kept it private before that public confirmation. The profile also reported that they moved together to Los Angeles in fall 2024; that is a dated report, not confirmation of their current living arrangements.
Why has Dacus wanted to protect the relationship?
Dacus has described a tension between sharing truthful work and preserving what she considers precious in her private life. Speaking to The New Yorker, she said: “It’s been interesting, because I want to protect what is precious in my life, but also to be honest, and make art that’s true,” she said. “I think maybe a part of it is just trusting that it’s not at risk.”
Her concern is also about being turned into a public character. In a Them interview, Dacus described a “fear of our whole lives becoming just characters in people’s superhero universe.” She has also put it this way: “The lore of it all – people treating our lives like a Marvel Universe,” she told The Forty-Five.

That discomfort does not mean she has said fans generally disregard boundaries. The New Yorker reported that Dacus felt her followers had generally respected them, while adding that “it only takes a handful to make your life feel like a really easily threatened thing.” A profile in Them also recounted that her address had leaked in the past and strangers came to her home. That episode gives context to privacy concerns, but it should not be taken as a description of all fans or of the couple’s present circumstances.
What has Dacus said about fan speculation?
In April 2025, Rolling Stone Australia reported that when asked about the online response, Dacus said, “I try not to look.” She said friends sometimes send her funny memes and described the relationship as a happy thing. She has also expressed discomfort with people treating their lives as a fictional universe, while making clear that some parts of her story remain private.

Dacus has not framed the choice as cutting off fans. Rather, her comments distinguish between sharing music and allowing strangers to define the private lives behind it. In a Guardian interview, she said of releasing personal work: “There’s this vague uneasiness to opening up that much. I can never tell why it feels scary, because ultimately, I feel secure in my relationships … I don’t love being perceived.”
How does Forever Is a Feeling relate to the relationship?
Dacus’s 2025 album Forever Is a Feeling is closely connected to the subject: the Los Angeles Times described it as largely about falling in love with Baker, while The Guardian characterized it as covering relationships at different stages, including falling in and out of love. The Guardian reported that the songs were written and recorded between 2022 and 2024.

The New Yorker reported that boygenius had decided before releasing The Record to take time off. Dacus described the pause as a way to protect the group’s friendship and energy. The Guardian described the band as being on hiatus in 2025. Those reports describe the situation at that time; they do not establish the band’s activity now.
