The “drama” refers to an on-set accident Butler later recounted, not evidence of a feud: a costume clip flew loose and struck Swank during filming. Swank spoke positively about working with Butler while promoting P.S. I Love You in 2007, but those remarks do not establish whether the actors remain friends or are in contact now.
What was the P.S. I Love You set incident?
In an account published by The Independent on January 26, 2023, Butler recalled an accident during a scene involving Irish-themed boxers and suspenders. A crocodile clip attached to his costume was meant to ping away from him, he said, but it stuck, then released and flew toward Swank. Butler said it cut her head and she was taken to hospital. This is Butler’s recollection as reported by the newspaper, not an independently reported medical record.
“She has to get taken to hospital,” Butler recalled. “Imagine a studio and in three seconds everybody’s gone and I’m just sitting there in my Irish boxer shorts, boots and a pair of socks.” He recounted the incident on Drew Barrymore’s show. His account describes an accident; it does not suggest that he meant to hurt Swank or that the incident caused a feud.
What did Swank say about working with Butler?
During the film’s 2007 promotion, Swank discussed the challenge of balancing comedy and grief in the story. In a Los Angeles Times interview published November 4, 2007, she praised Butler and the other actors as “Such a great trio of guys.” Speaking about Butler’s character, Gerry, she said: “My feeling is that we don’t go on this journey with Holly if you don’t love Gerry and what our relationship was.”

That was praise for the film’s emotional foundation and Butler’s performance. It was not a statement about the actors’ private relationship, either then or now.
Does the evidence show they are friends now?
No. Butler’s account explains the reported on-set incident, and Swank’s comments show that she spoke positively about the film and his work during promotion. Neither establishes their current personal relationship. No recent direct statement from either actor about a present-day friendship or contact appears in the sources cited here, so claims that they are close, estranged, or feuding would go beyond the available evidence.

Why the film’s on-screen conflict is separate
P.S. I Love You is a 2007 film based on Cecelia Ahern’s first novel. Swank plays Holly and Butler plays Gerry, her late husband; the story follows the letters he leaves for her. A fictional argument between those characters is part of the story and should not be mistaken for a real-life dispute between the actors.
