Spoilers for X-Men ’97 Season 1, Episode 5, and the Season 2 finale. Episode 5, “Remember It,” presents Gambit as dying while saving Rogue during the Sentinel attack on Genosha. Magneto is also left apparently dead in the catastrophe. But the episode’s cliffhanger is not the whole story: by the Season 2 finale, Gambit has returned and is free of Apocalypse’s influence. Magneto’s ultimate fate is not established by the episode or the later sources cited here.
Who dies in X-Men ’97 Episode 5?
“Remember It,” the fifth episode of Season 1, takes Rogue, Gambit, and Magneto to Genosha, where the island’s leaders are preparing for international recognition. A Sentinel assault turns the occasion into a massacre. In the closing devastation, Gambit intervenes to save Rogue and is treated as dead. Magneto is also left apparently killed or buried in the attack. ComicBook.com’s April 10, 2024 recap describes the episode’s events.
The distinction matters: the episode makes Gambit’s apparent death the emotional center of its ending, but an apparent death in a cliffhanger does not prove that a character’s story is over. Magneto’s fate is even less conclusive in the episode’s final images.
Is Gambit really dead?
No—not by the later point in the story covered by the Season 2 finale. The finale recap from GamesRadar, published August 12, 2026, reports that Apocalypse brings Gambit back and that Gambit is alive and free of Apocalypse’s influence by the finale. So “Remember It” presents Gambit as having died, but subsequent continuity reverses that outcome.

What happens to Magneto, Rogue, and Nightcrawler?

The Season 2 finale status for Rogue and Nightcrawler comes from GamesRadar’s August 12, 2026 recap. It is therefore important not to carry Episode 5’s momentary picture of who is lost forward as though it were the latest account of every character’s fate.
Why does the Genosha attack feel so consequential?
The attack draws on the destruction of Genosha in Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s 2001 New X-Men run, particularly the “E Is for Extinction” storyline. GameSpot’s April 12, 2024 coverage identifies that comic storyline as an influence. The animated series builds its own television story around the precedent; it is not an exact adaptation of every comic plot beat. Readers who want that context can look for a collected edition of New X-Men by Grant Morrison.

Episode creator and former showrunner Beau DeMayo said the episode was central to his pitch: “Episode 5 was the centerpiece of my pitch to Marvel in November 2020.” GameSpot also quoted his comparison of the story’s sense of safety being shattered with events including 9/11, Tulsa, Charlottesville, and Pulse Nightclub; that is DeMayo’s framing of the episode’s intent, not a claim that every viewer interprets it the same way.
Director Emi Yonemura described the care behind the losses in an interview covered by ComicBook.com’s Phase Zero: “I knew that it was going to be quite an undertaking, and we never wanted it to feel like it was death for death’s sake.” She added: “So I think the real challenge was earning it, and also by earning it, showing how much we love these characters, and we don’t want to see them go.”
