Chad Gable and Otis have described themselves as close friends in real life, long before they became WWE’s Alpha Academy teammates. They met through amateur wrestling, trained together in Colorado Springs and later shared workouts and road trips. Their recollections differ slightly on when they first met, so the safest timeline is that they knew each other by the late 2000s or 2010.
How did Chad Gable and Otis meet?
They connected through amateur wrestling at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, before their WWE partnership. Otis recalled meeting Gable around 2008; Gable recalled knowing Otis from the training center since 2010. Those are their separate recollections, not a single confirmed meeting date.
Both accounts describe time spent training together. Otis also said they hung out, while Gable recalled watching wrestling with him. The shared background gave them a relationship that existed outside the roles they would later play on television.
What have they said about their friendship?
In a 2021 interview with FOX Sports’ Ryan Satin, Otis said they were “good friends” in reality and that bringing their rapport to television was fun. In 2024, he told TV Insider, “We have been best friends to this day. I’m lucky to have him.” Those are Otis’s descriptions in interviews published at those dates.

Gable has described the bond in similar terms. After a tag-team title win, he wrote that “The Alpha Academy relationship is much more than a tag team. It’s been a brotherhood for 10+ years.” WrestleZone reproduced the statement in January 2022. The “10+ years” is Gable’s own characterization, rather than an independently established measurement.
How did their friendship shape Alpha Academy?
The WWE pairing came after they already knew each other. Otis recalled that people backstage encouraged them to bring their chemistry to television. Their team therefore gave an existing friendship and wrestling partnership an on-screen frame; it did not originate their connection.

Their shared time was not limited to matches or training sessions. Otis described traveling with Gable and enjoying the road as tag-team partners. In a 2022 USA Insider interview, he said, “Oh, nothing beats being on the road with your partner. That’s why I prefer being in a tag team. Especially with Chad,”
