Bridgerton’s romances belong to its characters, not automatically to the actors who play them. Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton, for example, addressed fan speculation about their relationship at a 2024 premiere; their on-screen chemistry was not evidence that they were dating. For other cast members, public reporting offers a few dated disclosures and leaves many personal lives unknown.
Are Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton dating?
Coughlan and Newton play Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, whose romance is central to the show. At the London premiere of Season 3 in June 2024, they responded to fans who speculated that the actors were together because of their chemistry on screen. The Associated Press reported that Newton described the fan response as “really sweet” and said viewers were invested in Colin and Pen; Coughlan remarked, “We can’t do anything.” These were comments about fan attention at a promotional event, not a current relationship-status announcement. The AP’s June 2024 report does not establish that the co-stars were dating.
What has been publicly reported about other cast members?
Public information is selective and date-bound, not a verified, current relationship roster for every Bridgerton actor. A January 29, 2026, Cosmopolitan roundup reports some disclosures and explicitly describes other cast members’ statuses as unknown or private. Treat these as reports about what was publicly available at that time, not as confirmation of anyone’s status today. Read the dated roundup.
- Claudia Jessie: The roundup says Jessie is dating casting director Cole Edwards and attributes a remark about getting a job and a partner on the same day to a 2024 interview with The Guardian. This is a secondary report, and the cited remark alone does not establish a present-day status.
- Victor Alli: The roundup cites Alli’s 2024 writing about living with his wife, Deborah. That is a reported public reference from 2024, not a comprehensive update on his private life.
- Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha: The roundup describes their relationship statuses as unknown. Unknown does not mean single, and fan speculation does not fill the gap.
- Other performers: Some cast members keep their personal lives private. Unless a person or a reputable report has made a relationship public, there is no sound basis to label them partnered or single.
Why the characters’ romances don’t reveal the actors’ relationships
Netflix’s official cast guide identifies the roles: Jonathan Bailey plays Anthony Bridgerton, Simone Ashley plays Kate Sharma, and Coughlan and Newton play Penelope and Colin. The show’s marriages and romances are fictional storylines; they are not evidence about the performers’ off-screen lives. Netflix’s relationship guide explains the characters’ relationships through Seasons 1–4, while its cast guide maps performers to roles. Netflix’s character relationship guide and official cast guide should be read as guides to the series, not to the actors’ dating lives.

How to read claims about cast members’ relationships
Relationship reporting can become outdated, and the difference between a confirmed disclosure and online speculation matters. When assessing a claim, check:
- Who is speaking? A person’s own public statement is different from a secondary outlet’s account or fan interpretation.
- When was it reported? A statement from 2024 establishes what was said then, not necessarily someone’s status in 2026.
- What does the source actually say? “Unknown” or “private” is not a synonym for “single.” On-screen chemistry, character pairings, and shipping are not confirmation of an off-screen relationship.
Where the Bridgerton stories come from
The series adapts Julia Quinn’s novels, as TIME notes in its profile of Jonathan Bailey. The books provide the source for the fictional stories; they do not verify anything about the cast’s real-life relationships.
