Arcane is not a documentary, but it is a useful case study in how video-game worlds can become serious, visually ambitious television. Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, produced by Riot Games and Fortiche Production, and released by Netflix, the animated series turns characters from League of Legends into the center of a self-contained drama about family, inequality, political power, and technological change.

The story is complete across two seasons. Both are available on Netflix, with nine episodes per season and 18 episodes in total.

What is Arcane about?

The series is set between two sharply divided cities. Piltover is wealthy, influential, and built around scientific innovation. Zaun, the industrial city below it, is poorer and politically marginalised. The relationship between the two cities deteriorates as new technology begins to transform the balance of power.

At the personal centre of the story are two sisters: Vi and Jinx, who was known as Powder when she was younger. Their relationship is shaped by childhood trauma, political violence, and the widening conflict between Piltover and Zaun. Their story gives the series an emotional focus while the wider plot follows scientists, politicians, revolutionaries, criminals, and military figures.

The major characters include:

  • Vi: a determined fighter whose loyalty to her sister repeatedly conflicts with her duties and ideals.
  • Jinx/Powder: an inventive but psychologically damaged young woman struggling with guilt, abandonment, and identity.
  • Caitlyn: a Piltover officer whose investigation brings her into direct contact with Zaun and Vi.
  • Jayce: an inventor and politician associated with the development of Hextech.
  • Viktor: a brilliant scientist whose pursuit of progress is connected to his declining health and changing view of humanity.
  • Ekko: a Zaunite inventor and organiser who represents resistance and community action.
  • Heimerdinger, Mel, Sevika, Ambessa, Vander, and Singed: supporting figures whose choices expand the political, scientific, and family conflicts.

Why the series matters to documentary and factual-film audiences

Arcane is fiction, not a documentary or historical reconstruction. Its value for documentary viewers lies elsewhere: it treats social structures as seriously as personal drama. The show repeatedly asks who benefits from technological progress, who is excluded from it, and whether political stability can exist when one population depends on another while denying it equal power.

Its Piltover-Zaun divide is a fantasy-world construction, but the issues are recognisable: class segregation, unequal access to education and healthcare, policing, industrial pollution, political representation, and the moral cost of innovation. Hextech—the combination of magic and science that drives much of the plot—works as both a story device and a metaphor for disruptive technology. It creates possibilities that may improve lives, while also becoming a tool of economic and military power.

The series also avoids presenting its central conflict as a simple battle between good and evil. Piltover’s institutions are often unjust, but Zaun’s resistance movements and criminal networks can also be violent and coercive. Characters are shaped by systems, yet remain responsible for their choices. That tension gives the drama more depth than a straightforward heroes-versus-villains narrative.

Animation and production

Riot Games developed the series with Fortiche Production, the French animation studio that had previously worked with Riot on the 2013 League of Legends music video “Get Jinxed.” Riot describes Arcane as its first television series.

Fortiche’s visual approach combines painterly backgrounds, expressive character animation, graphic-novel framing, and heavily stylised action. The series shifts between carefully composed stillness and explosive movement, allowing facial expressions and small gestures to carry as much weight as the fight scenes. Its visual language changes with the characters and locations: Piltover tends toward polished architecture and controlled geometry, while Zaun is denser, dirtier, and more improvisational.

Music is also central to the presentation. Songs are used to establish character, compress time, and give major sequences a distinct emotional rhythm. The result is closer to a music-driven prestige drama than to a conventional Saturday-morning cartoon.

Release history and episode count

Season Release Episodes Status
Season 1 November 6, 2021 9 Complete
Season 2 November 9, 16, and 23, 2024 9 Complete and final

Season 2 was released in three acts rather than as one full batch. It concludes the story of Arcane; it is not a setup for a third season. Riot has indicated that the series is part of a larger effort to tell stories in the wider Runeterra setting, but future projects in that universe should not be confused with a continuation of Arcane itself.

Do you need to know League of Legends?

No. The show uses characters and ideas from Riot Games’ League of Legends universe, but it is designed to work without prior game knowledge. Viewers can follow the central relationships, political conflict, and technological story using information provided in the episodes.

Game familiarity may add extra context, especially when recognising characters or understanding how the series reworks their established identities. It is not, however, a prerequisite. Arcane is an adaptation and reinterpretation rather than a scene-by-scene translation of game lore.

Where to watch

Both seasons are streaming on Netflix. Netflix lists the series as adult animation, fantasy, action, and a video-game adaptation, with a U.S. rating of TV-14. Ratings, subtitles, dubbing options, and availability can vary by country.

The show includes sustained violence, death, drug use, psychological distress, political repression, and references to abuse and trauma. It is animated, but it is not aimed exclusively at children.
