Apples Never Fall has the ingredients of an engrossing family mystery: a missing mother, four adult children forced to revisit their parents’ marriage, and a household history that resists easy answers. Peacock’s seven-episode adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel is built around Annette Bening and Sam Neill, with a shifting web of suspicion among the Delaneys. Its family drama and cast are the draw; its ending and treatment of Joy may be less satisfying for some viewers.
What is Apples Never Fall about?
The story follows retired tennis coaches Joy and Stan Delaney and their four adult children. When a wounded young woman turns up at the couple’s door, she unsettles the family. Later, Joy disappears, and the siblings must reconsider what they know about their parents’ relationship—and about the conflicts the family has kept buried.

The mystery works through changing suspicion as much as through the search for Joy. Alison Brie, who plays daughter Amy, described the experience as one in which viewers may suspect one person and then another from episode to episode. That is a cast member’s account, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the puzzle equally uncertain.
Who is in the cast?
Peacock’s principal family ensemble brings together established screen performers and the four actors playing the Delaney siblings:

Melanie Marnich is the showrunner. The premise gives the actors room to play family members whose loyalties and memories do not necessarily line up. The Associated Press also reported that the series was filmed in Queensland, Australia, and that cast members spoke about the close working relationships formed during production; that context alone does not establish how well the ensemble works on screen.
Does the family drama make the mystery compelling?
The disappearance gives the series a clear narrative engine, but the Delaneys’ relationships supply its more distinctive material. The children’s differing views of Stan’s innocence and their need to reassess their parents turn the question of what happened to Joy into a broader question about how well adult children can know their family.

That emphasis suits the limited-series format: Peacock announced that all seven episodes would be available on March 14, 2024. The show is therefore a contained adaptation rather than an open-ended series. Whether its uncertainty stays compelling through the ending is a separate matter. TIME’s review called the ending obvious, a pointed counterweight to the premise’s promise of shifting suspicion.
How does the adaptation compare with the novel?
Apples Never Fall is adapted from Liane Moriarty’s novel. Essie Randles, who plays Brooke, said the series differs slightly from the book, while Brie described suspicion moving between characters as the story unfolds. Those comments establish that the adaptation is not identical and signal one way its episodic structure handles the mystery; they do not provide a scene-by-scene account of what changed.
Readers considering both versions can compare how the novel’s family story is reshaped for seven episodes, how clearly the four siblings are differentiated, whether the mystery maintains uncertainty, and how the screen version renders Joy. Macmillan lists the Henry Holt and Company novel at 480 pages, with a September 14, 2021 on-sale date; its catalog page identifies paperback ISBN 9781250220264. See the publisher’s book listing.
What is the main reservation?
The strongest critical objection in the available reviews concerns Joy’s characterization as well as the resolution. TIME argued that the series reduces Joy to a maternal stereotype and found the ending obvious. Those are TIME’s judgments, not a universal verdict, but they matter because the story’s emotional stakes depend on Joy being more than the family’s missing center. A viewer who wants the mystery’s conclusion to feel surprising or Joy’s perspective to be fully developed may find the series falls short.
