Apple TV error 3905 is commonly associated with a failure to join Wi‑Fi. Apple does not publish a detailed, consumer-facing definition for this specific code, so it does not identify one cause by itself. Start by forgetting the saved network and re-entering its password, then restart Apple TV and your router.
This guide is for the Apple TV streaming box. If you see the error in the Apple TV app on a smart TV, the app and television may need separate troubleshooting.
Try these fixes first
- Check the network and password. Confirm that you selected the intended Wi‑Fi name (SSID). Enter the password carefully, including capitalization, punctuation, and spaces.
- Forget and rejoin Wi‑Fi. On Apple TV, go to Settings > Network > Wi‑Fi, select the saved network, choose Forget Network, then select it again and enter the password. On older models, the wording may differ; remove the saved network if that option is available.
- Restart Apple TV. Go to Settings > System > Restart. If the screen is unresponsive, unplug Apple TV, wait about 30 seconds, then reconnect it. Apple includes a 30-second power disconnect in its hardware troubleshooting guidance: Apple TV hardware troubleshooting.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug both from power. If they are separate devices, reconnect the modem first, wait for its connection lights to settle, then reconnect the router. Try joining Wi‑Fi again once the network is available. Apple recommends restarting network equipment for connection and streaming problems: Apple Wi‑Fi troubleshooting.
- Test another connection. Try a phone hotspot or, if your Apple TV has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router. These tests help distinguish a home-router problem from an Apple TV problem.
- Check for an update. If Apple TV can get online through Ethernet or another network, go to Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available update.
- Consider a reset or service only after those tests. A reset can clear settings, but it cannot fix a router that blocks the device or a hardware fault.
What error 3905 means
The code is generally associated with Apple TV failing to complete a Wi‑Fi connection, such as after selecting a network or entering its password. It does not prove that your internet service is down: the failure may happen between Apple TV and the router before the device reaches the internet.
Apple’s public network support explains how to troubleshoot connection problems but does not give error 3905 a specific official definition. The code appears in user reports involving older Apple TV models, including the second and third generations, but it is not established as exclusive to those models. Treat it as a clue about the connection, not a diagnosis. Apple’s guidance is at support.apple.com; examples of user reports include discussions at Mac Help, Whirlpool, and Reddit.

Use another network to isolate the cause
- Enable a personal hotspot on a phone and try to connect Apple TV to it.
- If the hotspot works but home Wi‑Fi does not, focus on the home router, its access rules, Wi‑Fi security, band, or signal.
- If Apple TV cannot join multiple known-good networks, investigate its software, recovery options, or Wi‑Fi hardware.
- If Apple TV joins Wi‑Fi but cannot stream, troubleshoot internet access and services rather than treating it as a Wi‑Fi-join error.
A hotspot is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix: it may use different security, frequency, signal strength, and authentication settings from your home network. Apple TV automatically uses Ethernet when a cable is connected on models with an Ethernet port; see Apple’s connection guidance.
Check router restrictions and compatibility
If other networks work, inspect the home router one setting at a time. Older Apple TV models may not behave like newer phones, so a phone joining successfully does not prove that every network setting is compatible.

- Try the primary home network instead of a guest network; guest isolation or restrictions can prevent a device from joining or communicating normally.
- If the router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, test a separately named band if your router allows it.
- If the router uses a newer security mode, a temporary test with a compatible WPA2 configuration may help identify a compatibility issue. The available choices depend on the router and Apple TV model.
- Check the router for a firmware update and test near the router, rather than relying on a weak extender signal.
Historical reports associate -3905 with filtering, security settings, and wireless interference, but they do not establish a single cause. Examples include a Whirlpool discussion, an Apple Stack Exchange report, and another connection-timeout discussion. Change one setting at a time, use temporary security changes only for testing, and restore your preferred protections afterward.
If Apple TV connects but streaming still fails
A device that has joined Wi‑Fi but cannot play content has a different problem from one that cannot join the network. Check whether another device can use the same internet connection, then check Apple System Status for an outage. If Apple TV is online but playback still fails, Apple recommends checking software and app updates, account sign-in, other devices, and the internet provider as appropriate: Apple TV app streaming troubleshooting.

In that guidance, Apple says HD streaming requires approximately 8 Mbit/s or faster. That figure is Apple’s cited guidance for HD streaming, not a universal minimum for every resolution, service, or household. An outage is more relevant when the device is already online and services or playback fail; it is less likely to explain an error that appears while joining Wi‑Fi.

Restore only after basic tests
Consider a factory reset only after forgetting and rejoining Wi‑Fi, restarting Apple TV and network equipment, testing another network or Ethernet, checking router restrictions, and installing any available update. A reset erases settings and account configuration, and it will not correct router incompatibility or a failed Wi‑Fi component.
Recovery steps vary by model. Some older Apple TV boxes have a USB service port and may require a computer and compatible legacy software. Identify the exact model before attempting recovery rather than assuming a generic iTunes procedure will work.

- If Apple TV works on a hotspot but not home Wi‑Fi, keep the diagnosis focused on the router rather than repeatedly resetting the box.
- If Ethernet works but Wi‑Fi fails across networks, a Wi‑Fi-specific fault or compatibility issue becomes more plausible.
- If multiple known-good networks fail after restart and software recovery, contact Apple or an appropriate service provider about the exact model. Repeatedly changing router settings is unlikely to help establish whether the hardware has failed.
Older Apple TV models appear often in error 3905 reports, but the code alone does not prove that a device is obsolete or unsupported. Check the model and its available software and services before deciding whether repair or replacement makes sense.
Identify which Apple TV you are troubleshooting
Check whether the device is an Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, a second- or third-generation Apple TV box, or a smart TV running the Apple TV app. Menus, update options, and recovery methods vary by model and software version. The app on a television is not the same hardware as an Apple TV streaming box, so app-specific failures may need the TV manufacturer’s update or support steps.
