Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill took the No. 1 spot when Apple Music completed its inaugural 100 Best Albums countdown on May 22, 2024. The ranking was an editorial selection, not a chart calculated from Apple Music streams.
Apple Music’s top 10 albums, in order
- Lauryn Hill — The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998)
- Michael Jackson — Thriller (1982)
- The Beatles — Abbey Road (1969)
- Prince — Purple Rain (1984)
- Frank Ocean — Blonde (2016)
- Stevie Wonder — Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
- Kendrick Lamar — good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Version) (2012)
- Amy Winehouse — Back to Black (2006)
- Nirvana — Nevermind (1991)
- Beyoncé — Lemonade (2016)
Apple’s final announcement and its 100 Best Albums microsite show the same order. The list’s precise entry for Kendrick Lamar is the Deluxe Version of good kid, m.A.A.d city.
What the countdown represents
Apple described the project as an editorial statement independent of listening numbers on Apple Music. Its editorial team worked with a select group of artists, songwriters, producers, and music-industry professionals; the company did not present the result as a measurable, universal answer to which albums are best.
The Associated Press reported that Apple’s internal team and selected outside voters submitted ranked album lists, with votes weighted by placement so higher-ranked choices counted more. Apple Music’s global editorial head of hip-hop and R&B, Ebro Darden, told AP, “This list isn’t a popularity contest.” He said voters were asked not to choose only their personal favorites.

How and when Apple revealed the albums
Apple announced the 100-album project on May 13, 2024, and revealed ten albums each day for ten days. The final ten, including Hill’s No. 1 album, were announced on May 22. The rollout included a dedicated microsite, editorial material, and Apple Music Radio episodes. Apple’s launch announcement named contributors including Maren Morris, Pharrell Williams, J Balvin, Charli XCX, Mark Hoppus, Honey Dijon, and Nia Archives.
Why the ranking is worth reading as an editorial choice
The countdown brings albums from different eras and genres into one ordered list, but its order reflects the people and voting approach Apple selected. That makes the ranking useful as a curated conversation starter, not a substitute for other critics’ lists, audience polls, sales figures, or streaming charts. A comparison with another “greatest albums” ranking is meaningful only when its voters, eligibility rules, and method are also clear.

- 100 ACID-FREE RICE PAPER INNER SLEEVES — Purpose-built to protect vinyl records from scratches, dust, and static from the inside out. Hudson Hi-Fi archival-grade material is safe for vintage pressings and modern releases alike.
- RICE PAPER ELIMINATES STATIC AT THE SOURCE — Unlike polyethylene sleeves that generate static with every insertion, our anti-static rice paper construction dissipates charge before it reaches your record surface, protecting both the vinyl and your stylus.
- SMOOTH-SLIDE DESIGN PREVENTS ACCIDENTAL SCRATCHES — Records glide in and out without friction or resistance. No more wrestling with tight sleeves or risking a scratch every time you pull a record for a listen.
- ACID-FREE FOR DECADE-LONG PRESERVATION — No PVC, no off-gassing, no degradation. These sleeves won't yellow, crack, or chemically react with your vinyl over time — critical for anyone serious about maintaining a collection long-term.
- FITS ANY STANDARD 12" LP RECORD — Sized for a snug, protective fit across standard single, double, and gatefold albums. Stock up with the 100-pack and protect your entire collection in one purchase.
Hill’s response to the No. 1 selection emphasized the collaborative history behind her album: “This is my award, but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”
