Anukul is a compact, unsettling science-fiction short that makes its case through carefully observed performances and visual subtext rather than a long explanation of its ideas. Sujoy Ghosh’s adaptation of Satyajit Ray’s story is well-made: its roughly 22-minute runtime gives the central relationship room to develop while keeping the film’s questions about work, judgment and human feeling pointedly open.
What is Anukul about?
The Hindi short follows Nikunj Chaturvedi, who takes in Anukul, a humanoid robot employed as a housekeeper. The story unfolds in a society where machines are replacing human workers, but it keeps that premise close to home: the tension comes through the people sharing domestic space with a machine and the assumptions they bring to it.
The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image’s 2017 catalogue lists the runtime as 21 minutes and 52 seconds. Apple TV rounds it to 21 minutes, while Prime Video lists 22 minutes. “About 22 minutes” is a useful expectation for viewers; the exact duration depends on the catalogue entry.
Why the short works
Gestures carry the subtext
The Indian Express review praises Ghosh’s reliance on gesture and implication, with meaning often carried by what characters do and how they respond rather than by explanatory dialogue. That restraint suits the premise: viewers are invited to read the relationship between Nikunj and Anukul instead of being told exactly what it means.

The performances make the relationships legible
Saurabh Shukla plays Nikunj, Parambrata Chattopadhyay plays Anukul, and Kharaj Mukherjee plays Ratan. The Indian Express highlights the nuance of the performances and the way the central characters receive arcs, rather than functioning only as pieces in a science-fiction thought experiment. The Nikunj–Anukul dynamic also takes on a student-and-teacher quality, giving their exchanges a human texture without resolving the film’s larger questions.
Economy serves the unsettling tone
Ghosh uses the short format purposefully: the domestic setup establishes the stakes, while an eerie, sometimes haunting mood lets its wider dystopian implications gather without turning the film into a lecture. The concise form is an advantage for viewers who want a complete idea and a distinct atmosphere in one sitting.

What ideas does the film leave open?
Discussions of the Gita and dharma connect the robot premise to moral reasoning: how do people interpret rules, decide what is right and respond to change? The Indian Express reads the film as probing whether feeling, interpretation and moral thought distinguish humans from machines. That is a productive way into the short, not a definitive answer supplied by it.
Ray’s source story is dated to 1976 in the MAMI catalogue, while Ghosh’s adaptation places the material in a 2017 Hindi-film context. The premise of machines displacing workers gives the story social stakes, but the film should not be treated as a forecast or statistical claim about present-day automation. Its force lies in the questions it raises about people and technology.

Who should watch it?
Anukul is a strong choice for viewers interested in thoughtful science fiction, short-form storytelling and adaptations that leave room for interpretation. It is well-made on its own terms: economical, performance-led and attentive to subtext. Viewers seeking extensive world-building or a single, explicit verdict on humans and machines may find its brevity and ambiguity less satisfying.
