It dramatizes the 1999 hijacking through both the ordeal aboard the aircraft and the response unfolding among officials. Sinha has described his aim as being fair to what happened while showing the competing pressures facing decision-makers.
What is IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack?
Released on Netflix on August 29, 2024, the series is a thriller inspired by the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814. Netflix describes the real event as a seven-day crisis that began on December 24, 1999, when the aircraft left Kathmandu with more than 175 passengers aboard. It was diverted through Amritsar, Lahore and Dubai before reaching Taliban-governed Kandahar. These details are Netflix’s account of the events.
Netflix lists the production as a 2024 limited series with six episodes. Anubhav Sinha directed it and co-created and co-wrote it with Trishant Srivastava. The cast includes Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Amrita Puri, Patralekhaa and Dibyendu Bhattacharya. Netflix’s title page is the official place to check current availability; language and subtitle options can vary by region.
How the series builds its story
The drama moves between the passengers and crew facing danger on the plane and the officials grappling with the crisis on the ground. That parallel structure gives the story more than one point of pressure: the immediate stakes aboard the aircraft sit alongside negotiations and political decision-making. Netflix’s episode descriptions and synopsis establish this split between the onboard ordeal and the official response.

The Scroll headline describes Sinha’s approach as “an accessible thriller with layering.” That is the headline’s wording, not a verified direct quotation from Sinha. The framing fits the series’ ensemble and interwoven strands, but the available interview material does not establish further specific remarks from him to Scroll.
What Sinha said about fairness and pressure
In a September 5, 2024, interview with India Today, Sinha said, “The first half is that you want to be fair to what happened.” He described the crisis as a “multidirectional tug of war,” pointing to the coalition government, the aftermath of the Kargil War and wider political circumstances as pressures on decision-makers. He also stressed that using force could put hostages at risk. These are Sinha’s explanations of the dramatic and political tensions, not an independent historical verdict.

Sinha also told India Today that he had been impressed by French director Olivier Assayas’s use of real-life footage, which helped inform his effort to ground the narrative. He said he approached the long-form OTT project “like a film.” The comments describe his creative choices; they do not establish that every scene reproduces a documented event.
Is the series based on a true story?
It is inspired by the 1999 hijacking, but it is a dramatized adaptation rather than a documentary record. Netflix identifies Flight into Fear: A Captain’s Story, by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury, as its adaptation source. Viewers can use the book and Netflix’s episode summaries to distinguish the captain’s account and the series’ story choices; a dramatized scene should not automatically be treated as a verified historical detail.
