Abigail Hopkins, Anthony Hopkins’s daughter with his first wife, Petronella Barker, has been reported as saying that a short period of amphetamine and alcohol misuse at age 18 coincided with depression and brought her close to suicide. What did Abigail Hopkins say about her crisis?
Later coverage says Abigail discussed the episode in a 2006 interview with The Telegraph. The original interview is not available in the cited coverage here, so her words and details are best understood as reported by those later outlets. They describe a short period at age 18 in which she misused amphetamines and alcohol while depressed. Abigail was quoted as saying, “I totally abused my mind and body,” and, “I came very close to killing myself.” Yahoo’s 2018 account and later coverage of the Telegraph interview attribute these statements to her.
The reported language is that she came close to killing herself. The cited accounts do not establish an overdose or suicide attempt, nor do they provide a clinical diagnosis or treatment history. They describe a past crisis, not her current health or circumstances.

How did she interpret her relationship with her father?
In the statements attributed to the 2006 interview, Abigail connected her distress to the intermittent relationship she had with her father when she was young: “The root cause was the fact that my father and I had an intermittent relationship when I was young.” This is her account of how she understood her experience; the reporting does not establish that estrangement clinically caused her substance misuse or suicidal thoughts.

In a 2010 Guardian interview, Hopkins rejected a report that he and Abigail had reunited, saying he had had no contact with her for years at that point. That is a statement about the situation then, not evidence of whether they are in contact today. The Guardian’s 2010 interview.
Hopkins’s memoir, We Did OK, Kid, and later coverage discuss his regret, the estrangement, and a past attempt to reconnect.
