Annette Funicello, the beloved original Mouseketeer who became a Disney star and a fixture of 1960s beach movies, died on April 8, 2013, at age 70. She died at Mercy Southwest Hospital in Bakersfield, California; the Los Angeles Times reported that complications of multiple sclerosis caused her death. Funicello had been diagnosed with MS in 1987 but did not disclose the illness publicly until 1992.
How Annette Funicello became a star
Born in Utica, New York, on October 22, 1942, Funicello was discovered after performing the lead in Swan Lake at a Burbank recital. She joined the original The Mickey Mouse Club as a Mouseketeer and appeared in the show’s serials. After the program ended, Disney retained her under contract.

Her Disney film credits included The Shaggy Dog, Babes in Toyland and The Monkey’s Uncle. She also recorded music: D23 lists 15 albums and singles, including “Tall Paul” and “How Will I Know My Love?” In the early 1960s, she starred opposite teen idol Frankie Avalon in American International Pictures beach movies such as Beach Party and Beach Blanket Bingo. Her MS diagnosis and public disclosure
Funicello was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1987. She made the illness public in 1992, a five-year gap that matters: she did not immediately discuss the diagnosis publicly. The Los Angeles Times obituary recounts that she noticed difficulty balancing while filming on sand and worsening eyesight; she later described those experiences in an interview with People. A neurological examination preceded her diagnosis.

After disclosing her illness, Funicello became a spokeswoman for treatment and supported awareness and neurological-disease research. D23 says she created the Annette Funicello Research Fund for Neurological Diseases. These accounts establish her public advocacy, but do not support claims about a particular treatment outcome.
How colleagues and Disney remembered her
Frankie Avalon, her co-star, recalled the warmth that made her connect with audiences: “She had a heart and a soul and a feeling about her that everybody just connected to — male or female — without being pretentious in any way.” He also called her “America’s sweetheart,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
In its April 8, 2013 announcement, Disney chairman and chief executive Bob Iger said: “Annette was and always will be a cherished member of the Disney family, synonymous with the word Mousketeer, and a true Disney Legend.”
