Anne Burrell’s most practical advice is to get organized before cooking: read the recipe, gather and inspect the ingredients, and do the required prep before you start. Once the food is cooking, taste it and adjust the seasoning. The sources support these as complementary habits—not an officially ranked “number one” tip.
What is Anne Burrell’s number-one cooking tip?
There is no verified official ranking behind the “#1” phrasing. Food Network’s beginner-cook feature attributes a clear preparation habit to Burrell: “Make sure you have all of the ingredients, get them out, look at them, inspect them and do your prep work.” The point is to avoid having to stop and hunt for ingredients once cooking is underway. Burrell has also given a distinct seasoning tip. In a 2011 MidWeek interview, when asked for her favorite kitchen tip, she said: “Use salt! It’s a flavor enhancer. Taste everything as you go along.” (MidWeek interview, May 18, 2011.) The two tips fit together: prepare before turning to the heat, then taste during cooking.
What does mise en place mean?
Mise en place is the habit of getting the ingredients and preparation in order before cooking. In practical terms, that means taking out what the recipe calls for, checking it, and doing tasks such as washing, chopping, measuring, or portioning before you begin the cooking steps. Burrell’s Food Network advice emphasizes gathering, inspecting, and prepping; it does not require special equipment or a professional kitchen.

For a workable routine:
- Read the recipe from start to finish. Burrell told MidWeek, “Read the recipe from start to finish.” Doing so lets you see the sequence and identify steps you may not need.
- Gather and inspect the ingredients. Check that you have what the recipe calls for and that the ingredients are ready to use.
- Complete the recipe’s prep. Chop, measure, or otherwise prepare ingredients as directed, then keep them accessible while you cook.
A quality knife and cutting board can make ingredient prep easier, but Food Network recommends building kitchen equipment gradually; buying new gear is not a prerequisite for this habit.
When should you taste and season food?
Taste as the food cooks, as Burrell advises in both her MidWeek interview and Food Network’s beginner-cook feature. Season thoughtfully and check the result rather than assuming the recipe’s listed amount will suit every ingredient or palate. Salt can enhance flavor, but the interview does not prescribe a universal quantity; add it in measured increments and taste again.

Preparation and tasting solve different problems. Mise en place helps you begin with ingredients ready; tasting gives you a chance to assess flavor as the dish develops. Neither tip guarantees a particular result, and the reviewed sources provide no measured statistic for how much either improves cooking.
