Who was Anita Lane?
Lane was a Melbourne-born Australian singer-songwriter. Her connection to Nick Cave was both personal and creative: she contributed writing to the Birthday Party and the Bad Seeds, and pursued her own recordings as a solo artist. The Guardian’s 2021 obituary quoted photographer Bleddyn Butcher, who documented Cave’s early years, calling Lane’s influence on Cave’s early thinking and creative confidence “catalytic.” The Guardian obituary gives an account of that creative relationship.

What did Anita Lane write and record with Nick Cave?
Lane’s contributions were not limited to her relationship with Cave. The Guardian reports that she co-wrote “A Dead Song,” contributed to later Birthday Party material, and wrote lyrics for the Bad Seeds songs “From Her to Eternity” and “Stranger Than Kindness.” She also sang with Cave on a version of Bob Dylan’s “Death Is Not the End.” The Guardian’s obituary documents these examples.

Lane died in April 2021, aged 61. The Guardian and Pitchfork reported her death on April 28, 2021, and both said no cause had been announced. The Guardian and Pitchfork are contemporary reports. AllMusic lists April 27 as her death date, so the exact calendar day is not consistent across these sources; April 2021 is the careful wording.
