For anime that directly includes trans or non-binary characters, start with Tokyo Godfathers, Zombie Land Saga, Stars Align, Skip and Loafer, or My Hero Academia. They offer very different kinds of representation, and none is a perfect fit for every viewer: some portrayals include misgendering, violence, or jokes that may land painfully. The distinctions below separate identities stated in a story from official supplementary confirmation and more uncertain readings.
How to read this list
“Great representation” is a judgment, not a settled ranking. These picks are recommendations, not a definitive top five. A character explicitly identified in a story is different from one confirmed in supplementary material, and both differ from a character whom viewers interpret as trans or non-binary without confirmation. Adaptations and translations can also change what viewers encounter.
The list is limited to titles with support for the specific character details described here. It does not stretch the count by presenting ambiguous readings or gender-change comedies as confirmed trans representation.
Anime recommendations
Tokyo Godfathers (2003)
Satoshi Kon’s animated film follows three people living on the streets of Tokyo who find an abandoned baby. Hana, a trans woman who longs to be a mother, is central to its found-family story. Her place in the group gives the film an unusually prominent trans character within a story not solely about gender identity.

#1 Best Overall
Content and version note: The film includes insults and deliberate misgendering early on. Localization choices have affected how audiences read Hana, so check which dub or subtitles you are watching if language matters to you. GKIDS released a new English dub in 2020 featuring trans actor Shakina Nayfack as Hana; subtitles and dubs may differ.
Zombie Land Saga (2018)
Lily Hoshikawa is a trans girl in an idol group made up of zombies. Episode 8 reveals her past as a child actor, and the other members ultimately accept her. Lily is a memorable part of the group, though her identity is not the series’ only subject.
Content note: The circumstances of Lily’s death are played for slapstick, and one moment handles her old name carelessly. The portrayal is mixed rather than uncomplicatedly affirming. The franchise’s official site confirms production and character details, but does not itself establish Lily’s trans identity.
Rank #2
Stars Align (Hoshiai no Sora, 2019)
Club manager Yu Asuka speaks about an uncertain non-binary or x-gender identity and is uncomfortable with having to settle on a category. The uncertainty is part of the characterization: it is more accurate to preserve Yu’s expressed discomfort with labels than to assign a more definite identity. The series also includes a recurring trans male character.

The story is a useful choice for viewers interested in gender questioning and in characters whose relationship to identity labels is not presented as a finished answer.
Skip and Loafer (2023)
Nao, Mitsumi’s trans woman aunt, is a stylist whose identity is part of her family life rather than the sole focus of the story. In one telling moment, Mitsumi notices strangers whispering about Nao, takes her hand, and carries on talking with her. The scene offers a warm example of everyday support without making Nao’s identity disappear.
Rank #3
My Hero Academia
The series includes two characters with different kinds of supporting evidence. Tiger is a trans man, with confirmation in supplementary manga character material. Magne is a trans woman; her allies refer to her as “Big Sis,” and the English anime includes a correction when someone misgenders her.
Content note: Magne dies violently. Promotional material has also treated the characters inconsistently, so the evidence for each character should not be collapsed into a single claim about what the main anime explicitly says: Tiger’s confirmation is supplementary, while Magne’s recognition appears through her allies’ language in the anime.

Wandering Son (Hourou Musuko)
Takako Shimura’s story centers on Shuichi Nitori, who wants to be a girl, and Yoshino Takatsuki, who wants to be a boy. The anime adaptation begins around junior high school; the manga follows the characters further and also includes Makoto Ariga and Yuki, an adult trans woman who advises the children. The publisher describes its collected first two volumes as a coming-of-age story about the protagonists figuring out their gender identities and identifies Yuki as a trans mentor.
Rank #4
It is a strong starting point if you want gender identity at the center of a coming-of-age story, but expect cruelty and transphobia alongside supportive relationships. Since this assignment is about anime, it belongs here as a related manga recommendation rather than as a sixth anime title.

Fan readings and unresolved identity
Hunter x Hunter’s Alluka Zoldyck is often read as trans because Killua treats Alluka as his sister, while much of the family calls Alluka a boy. The series does not use the trans label, and no creator confirmation is established here. That makes it an interpretation, not confirmed canon. The character’s story also involves family abuse and confinement.
Blue Period’s Yuka Ayukawa has gender expression and dialogue that have prompted genderfluid interpretations, but the anime does not spell out an identity. It is best described as open to interpretation.

Different treatment across versions
In the 1990s Sailor Moon anime, the Sailor Starlights present with male bodies in daily life and become women when transformed; Naoko Takeuchi’s manga treats them as women disguised as men. That makes them a complex example of gender presentation and adaptation differences, not a straightforward trans-canon entry.
Gender-change premises and gender nonconformity
Ranma ½ and Onimai use body-change premises that may resonate with some trans viewers, but that alone does not make them straightforward stories about characters who identify as trans. Senpai Is an Otokonoko is also better treated as gender-nonconforming context than as settled trans representation: its subtitles use he/him for Makoto while leaving the character’s comfort and identity more complicated.
These distinctions matter because an anime can explore gender without explicitly identifying a character as trans or non-binary. As a 2023 University of Edinburgh thesis puts it, “Gender nonconformity can perhaps be said to occupy a ‘queer’ positionality in the wider world of manga and anime.” That is an interpretive framing, not a claim that every gender-nonconforming character has the same identity.
Quick Recap
Choosing what to watch
- For a found-family film with a central trans character: try Tokyo Godfathers, while keeping its misgendering and version differences in mind.
- For an idol-group story: try Zombie Land Saga if you are comfortable with its slapstick death circumstances and careless old-name moment.
- For an uncertain relationship to identity labels: try Stars Align.
- For a trans character in everyday family life: try Skip and Loafer.
- For supplementary confirmation and a violent content warning: My Hero Academia includes Tiger and Magne, but their evidence comes from different places.
- For gender identity as the central coming-of-age subject: consider the Wandering Son manga, which follows its characters further than the anime adaptation.
