Tiger Mask: masked-wrestler melodrama
Naoto Date grows up in an orphanage and is trained by Tiger’s Den, a villainous wrestling organization. Wrestling under the Tiger Mask identity, he learns that his childhood orphanage is in financial trouble and tries to repay its debt with his earnings while facing wrestlers sent after him. Toei’s official story page supports the series’ central appeal: a masked hero caught between a violent wrestling world and a personal sense of responsibility.
Choose Tiger Mask if you want wrestling to carry a clear moral conflict, not just a sequence of matches. The mask, the organization behind it, and Naoto’s ties to the orphanage give the action an emotional through-line. Toei’s anime page establishes an anime version; Kodansha lists a print edition of manga volume 1, published August 8, 2001, with 440 pages and ISBN 9784063600599, describing it as a classic professional wrestling manga. See Kodansha’s catalog entry.
Kinnikuman: superhuman tournament spectacle
Kinnikuman starts as a clumsy, mocked superhuman, then discovers he is a prince from Planet Kinniku. Toei’s series page frames the story around the Chojin Olympics and other contests, rivalries, friendship, and the protagonist’s development. Its wrestling is fantasy combat on a superhero scale rather than a realistic account of the sport.

Pick this one for tournament progression, outlandish opponents, and an expanding ensemble. The official anime introduction says the manga resumed serialization in November 2011, continuing from its original ending, and identifies the Perfect Origin Arc as the basis for a later anime adaptation. The official anime introduction also gives historical context: it reports TV ratings above 20% for the television anime that began in 1983, and more than 180 million Kinkeshi capsule toys sold. The page does not specify the reporting year for either figure, so treat them as claims made by the official site, not independently verified statistics.
Puroresu Men: comedy about life in a small promotion
Rookie Torama Hyota is busy training for his debut and serving as an attendant to eccentric wrestlers in the small Masurao promotion. That premise puts the work’s attention on the routines and personalities around the ring as much as on wrestling itself. Kodansha classifies it as a wrestling gag/comedy manga. Its catalog lists a print edition published February 4, 2011, with 208 pages and ISBN 9784063820010, as well as an electronic edition; see Kodansha’s catalog entry.
Read Puroresu Men if you’re after a lighter, promotion-centered story rather than a heroic sports drama. The publisher’s listing supports it as manga; it does not establish an anime adaptation.
