Anim na Sabado ng Beyblade is associated with Filipino writer Ferdinand Pisigan Jarin and his essay “Beyblade,” a personal account grounded in fatherhood and grief. It is also the title of his essay collection, Anim na Sabado ng Beyblade at iba pang sanaysay. GMA News Online’s 2023 feature reports that Jarin began writing about his son Rebo after seeing the boy’s Beyblades at his wake.
What is Anim na Sabado ng Beyblade?
The title is not a Beyblade tournament or a series about the spinning-top toy. It refers to a work by Filipino essayist Ferdinand Pisigan Jarin: “Beyblade,” the main essay in his collection Anim na Sabado ng Beyblade at iba pang sanaysay. The University of the Philippines literary bibliography also lists Anim na Sabado ng Beyblade, 2nd Edition, though that listing alone does not establish current retail availability or the full edition history.
For a reader asking what kind of text it is, the most precise description supported by the available accounts is a personal essay within a collection of essays. GMA News Online describes “Beyblade” as recounting Jarin’s journey from fatherhood to grief; the complete original essay is not available in the sources cited here, so more detailed plot summaries would go beyond what those accounts establish.
Why does Beyblade matter to the story?
GMA’s 2023 feature identifies Beyblade as Rebo’s favorite toy and situates the essay in 2004, when colorful spinning tops from Japan were popular among children. The toy connects the account to Rebo’s childhood, but broader claims about its symbolism should be treated as interpretation rather than an author-confirmed explanation.

A 2026 animated retelling frames Beyblade as a symbol of Rebo’s childhood and resilience. That is the video maker’s interpretation, not a verified statement from Jarin. The strongest documented link is more direct: Beyblades were Rebo’s favorite toy, and Jarin recalled seeing them at his son’s wake.
What inspired Jarin to write it?
In GMA News Online’s 2023 feature, Jarin recalled: “I was staring at Rebo’s beyblades on top of his casket on the third night of the wake when I decided to write about him.” This is Jarin describing the moment that prompted him to write; it is not a quotation from the essay itself.

Jarin also described the difficulty of writing personally: “My pace was one essay a year. It’s hard to write when it means exposing yourself.” GMA reports that it took him almost a decade to complete the collection’s ten essays. The feature says three essays won Carlos Palanca awards but does not identify award years.
