Anika Noni Rose and Jason Dirden married on October 16, 2022, at the Paramour Estate in Los Angeles, with actor Colman Domingo officiating. They planned the outdoor celebration in about eight weeks, kept their relationship private until announcing the marriage in January 2023, and filled the day with personal touches—including a custom gown, family-made desserts and a surprise first dance.
When and where did Anika Noni Rose and Jason Dirden marry?
The couple married on October 16, 2022, at the Paramour Estate in Los Angeles. Colman Domingo officiated the ceremony. The date, venue and officiant were reported in contemporaneous coverage by Playbill and Broadway.com.
They had considered locations on the East Coast, including a vineyard, and Houston, where Dirden’s immediate family lived. They ultimately chose California, where an outdoor event made sense for their plans and circumstances. The estate, a 1920s property, offered a setting they could adapt to the celebration they wanted.
How did they plan the wedding in eight weeks?
Work schedules shaped the short planning window. Rose had been filming in New York from January through June and returned to Los Angeles around mid-August. Dirden said they were able to turn their attention to planning near the end of July. They chose from five available dates at the estate and organized the outdoor wedding in about eight weeks. In their 2023 interview with Munaluchi Bride, Rose summed up the timeline: “We had eight weeks!”

Dirden described their approach as deliberate: “We are so intentional about how we move, and if we’re going to have something, it has to be of us.”
What made the ceremony and reception personal?
The couple wanted a celebration that felt elegant without making guests feel like outsiders. Framed photographs, fairy lights and electric candles helped shape the estate’s atmosphere. Cocktail hour took place beside the pool, with a quartet playing both contemporary and classical music.

The dresses and first dance
Rose wore a custom gown by Alonuko Bridal, designed by Gbemi Okunlola, according to WBLS. For the reception, she changed into a dress designed by Simin of Simin Couture. Rose said it was made in two weeks.
Their first dance was to Norah Jones’s “Come Away With Me.” Rose secretly rerecorded the song with her own vocals. Dirden recognized her voice during the dance, and the surprise moved him.

Cake, cookies and customized details
Rose’s cousin, Maria B. Rose of The Tiered Bake Shoppe in Boston, made the wedding cake with apricot filling and white chocolate frosting. Real flowers and gold leaf decorated it. Rose said she loves apricot because it is “not too sweet.” Dirden’s mother baked about 300 cookies as an alternative to a groom’s cake. The couple later realized they had forgotten to save the cake’s top tier; when they returned the next day, half of it was gone.
Other touches included bubbles, personalized ribbons and ties, a flower girl’s basket and customized chocolate-bar labels. The details reflected the couple’s own preferences rather than being chosen only for appearance.

How did Rose and Dirden meet, and why did they keep their relationship private?
Rose and Dirden met while performing in the 2014 Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun. They were friends before reconnecting. Although their relationship remained private, the couple said that was a conscious choice: they wanted to discover who they were together without the public becoming a third party. Rose put it plainly in the Munaluchi Bride interview: “We didn’t want to be a throuple with the public.”
Dirden proposed in December 2021 during his family’s Secret Santa Zoom call, according to the couple’s interview and contemporaneous coverage. They chose the engagement-ring design together, with Rose taking the lead because she knew what she liked to wear.
