At Matthew Flame’s December 2020 sentencing hearing, Angry Anderson read a victim impact statement about the death of his youngest son, Liam. “I have a hole in my heart. I’m no longer whole. My youngest and baby boy is gone, and my life will never be as it was,” he said, as quoted by PerthNow.
What Angry Anderson said at the sentencing hearing
Anderson addressed Flame while reading his victim impact statement, describing a loss that had changed his family’s life. The statement captured the continuing grief following Liam’s death; it was not a new interview or a comment made at the time of the attack.
In an April 2019 interview with Andrew Denton, Anderson had put his feelings another way: “I am not angry. I am just profoundly sad,” 7NEWS reported. 7NEWS
Who was Liam Anderson?
Liam was Angry Anderson’s youngest son. He was 26 when he died in November 2018 after an attack in Queenscliff, according to PerthNow. Matthew Flame, a friend of Liam’s, was charged with murder.

What the jury decided and the sentence reported
Flame’s trial took place in the NSW Supreme Court in 2020. The jury found him guilty of manslaughter and not guilty of murder, as recounted in PerthNow’s sentencing report. The verdict was manslaughter, not murder.
7NEWS reported that Flame received an eight-year prison sentence for manslaughter in December 2020. The available reporting establishes that outcome at the time; it does not establish whether there were later appeals or Flame’s current custody status. 7NEWS

What the prosecution and defense argued
The accounts of Flame’s mental state were competing arguments made in court, not findings that should be generalized beyond this case.
- Defense: Flame’s barrister argued that he was experiencing severe psychiatric illness. PerthNow reported the defense said he had psychosis associated with schizophrenia and believed Liam was a demon.
- Prosecution: The Crown argued that drug use brought on the psychosis and that mental illness did not cause the attack.
Flame’s barrister, John Stratton SC, described the matter as “from any point of view a very tragic case,” PerthNow reported.
