Her story is unusual in its reach across hip-hop’s early years and the later neo-soul movement. Stone was not only a solo soul singer: she was a rapper and vocalist in The Sequence, an early all-women group in hip-hop, before building a long solo career and appearing on stage and screen.
Was Angie Stone in The Sequence?
Yes. In 1979, Stone co-founded The Sequence with Cheryl “ the Pearl” Cook and Gwendolyn “Blondy” Chisolm, performing as Angie B. The group signed to Sugar Hill Records, and its single “Funk You Up” paired rapping with melodic R&B vocals. The track became a landmark recording in early hip-hop and remains the clearest starting point for understanding Stone’s career. The Associated Press, Georgia Public Broadcasting and the Congressional Record all document the group’s place in her history.

“Funk You Up” also offered a glimpse of the musical blend Stone would revisit throughout her career: rhythmic vocal delivery alongside soul and R&B melody. The Sequence’s work belongs to hip-hop’s formative period, not merely as a footnote before Stone’s later solo success, but as a major part of her legacy.
How did Angie Stone move from group work to a solo career?
Vertical Hold and the transition to solo work
After The Sequence, Stone joined the R&B trio Vertical Hold. Georgia Public Broadcasting identifies the group’s “Seems You’re Much Too Busy” as a Top 40 R&B song in 1993. The group years connected Stone’s early rap work to the contemporary R&B sound she would explore as a solo artist.

Black Diamond and Mahogany Soul
Stone’s solo debut, Black Diamond, arrived in 1999, followed by Mahogany Soul in 2001. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that both albums were certified gold. Her later solo work was often described as neo-soul, a label for music drawing on contemporary R&B and soul alongside influences such as hip-hop and jazz. That description fits an important phase of her career, but not its entirety.
“No More Rain (In This Cloud)” and “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” became signature songs. The AP reported that “No More Rain” spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B airplay chart, and that Mahogany Soul reached No. 22 on the Billboard 200. “Baby” is another useful entry point into Stone’s solo catalog.

What was Angie Stone known for beyond music?
Stone continued recording for decades, releasing albums including Stone Love, The Art of Love & War and Love Language in 2023. AllMusic and the Congressional Record count ten solo albums and three Grammy nominations. She also acted in film and television and appeared on Broadway in Chicago, extending her career beyond recordings and concert stages.
In a tribute entered into the Congressional Record on March 5, 2025, Representative James E. Clyburn said: “Her career spanned nearly five decades, defined by innovation, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her craft.”
