Why was she at the festival?
The Eddington premiere
Coverage connected Jolie’s Cannes appearance to the premiere of Eddington. At that event, she wore a strapless gown, according to the reports.
The Trophée Chopard dinner
Jolie also served as godmother at the Trophée Chopard event. She presented awards to Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett. In the statement attributed to her by Variety and quoted in the AOL/InStyle report, Jolie said, “I am honored to be Godmother at the Cannes Film Festival,” and added, “I am pleased to have a moment to recognize young artists and their exceptional work.”

The first-since-2011 description comes from secondary reporting. The coverage supports that account, but does not establish a complete attendance chronology through an official Cannes or Chopard record. The appearance is therefore best described as reported to be Jolie’s first at the festival since 2011.
