Angelina Jolie says she loves her double-mastectomy scars because they represent a choice she made to stay with her children and take proactive steps for her health. In a France Inter interview reported on February 11, 2026, she also said she is more interested in the scars and lives people carry than in an ideal of life without scars.
What Angelina Jolie said about her scars
While promoting Couture, Jolie spoke with France Inter about the scars from her preventive double mastectomy. The Independent reported her remarks on February 11, 2026, quoting her as saying: “My scars are a choice I made to do what I could do to stay here as long as I could with my children. I love my scars because of that, and I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to have the choice to do something proactive about my health.” (The Independent)
She also described her interest in the experiences scars can signify: “I’ve always been someone more interested in the scars and the life that people carry,” she said, adding, “I’m not drawn to some perfect idea of a life that has no scars.” These quotations were reproduced by The Independent; The Daily Beast also reported the central comments from the France Inter interview. Why Jolie chose preventive surgery
Jolie publicly explained her decision in a May 14, 2013 essay for The New York Times, “My Medical Choice.” She wrote that she carried a BRCA1 mutation and that her doctors had estimated her personal breast-cancer risk at 87 percent and her ovarian-cancer risk at 50 percent. She emphasized that risk varies from woman to woman. Those figures were her doctors’ estimates for her, not general risk levels for people with a BRCA1 mutation. (The New York Times; ABC News)

In the essay, Jolie said her reported breast-cancer risk estimate fell from 87 percent to under 5 percent after surgery. She described undergoing a mastectomy followed by reconstruction with an implant. That result, like the original risk estimate, belongs to her individual account; it should not be read as a predicted outcome for someone else.
Jolie also addressed what the decision meant to her sense of self: “I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.” She wrote that she hoped other women would know they had options. Her account is a personal explanation, not a recommendation that others choose the same procedure; decisions about inherited cancer risk and preventive care require individualized discussion with medical professionals. How the recent remarks fit into her public story
In December 2025, Cadena SER reported that Jolie had shared her mastectomy scars on the cover of Time France. The report said she framed that visibility as a way to raise awareness and quoted her describing how moved she is when women share their scars with her. The February 2026 France Inter comments continued that public conversation about scars as part of lived experience. (Cadena SER)
The interview also came during promotion for Couture, in which Jolie plays a filmmaker diagnosed with breast cancer. That role is separate from Jolie’s own medical history: her preventive surgery followed her personal risk assessment, as she explained in 2013.
