Andrew Garfield’s “time of his life” is less a story of effortless happiness than of returning to acting with a changed sense of what matters. In a 2024 interview with David Fear for Rolling Stone UK, Garfield described stepping away from work, living with uncertainty and grief, and finding that We Live in Time spoke to questions he was already asking.
Why Garfield stepped away from acting
Garfield said he took time away from projects to have experiences beyond acting and consider how he wanted to proceed. He described the period as confusing, as well as an opportunity to “refill the coffers of experience.” He spent time surfing, reading and seeing friends, but did not present the break as a formula or a fixed plan for changing careers.
In the interview, he explained that he was unsure how to move forward “in this particular moment, in this particular time, in this particular world and culture, and at my particular age.” That uncertainty matters to the story: his time away was not simply a celebratory sabbatical, but a period of questioning what work and life should look like next.
Why We Live in Time brought him back
Garfield said he had not planned to start another project immediately. The film, in which he stars opposite Florence Pugh, connected with questions he was already exploring and felt aligned with where he was in life. As he put it to Fear: “I hadn’t planned on doing anything, really. But then this film felt like it was asking all the same questions that I was asking anyway.”

The film’s non-chronological structure also gave the conversation a way into memory and time: how past experiences shape what people understand about the present. Garfield said the script made him feel seen. His explanation is personal rather than a claim that the film offers a universal answer to grief, relationships or aging.
His “midlife rejiggering” and the effect of grief
When Fear suggested “midlife crisis,” Garfield offered a different phrase: “I would call it a midlife rejiggering, reassembling, reordering.” He linked his changing outlook in part to the death of his mother in 2019, saying it had helped him see life as more complex, difficult, joyful and mysterious than he had previously understood.

These are Garfield’s own reflections in the interview, not a diagnosis or a claim that grief follows one path. They give the headline its more complicated meaning: he described renewed enthusiasm alongside uncertainty and loss, rather than an uncomplicated period of happiness.
Why he sees acting as a collaborative art
Garfield contrasted acting with the imagined independence of painting or sculpture. Film and theatre, he said, depend on a team, a crew and a budget; the work cannot be made by one person alone. That reliance on other people is part of what makes the medium meaningful to him.

What Garfield remembers about working with three directors
In discussing earlier projects, Garfield compared his experiences with Martin Scorsese, David Fincher and Luca Guadagnino. He described specific sets and moments, not universal rules for how these directors work.

| Director | Garfield’s recollection |
|---|---|
| Martin Scorsese | Garfield recalled a joyful atmosphere on Silence, alongside moments when Scorsese required quiet. |
| David Fincher | Garfield said Fincher wanted to pursue many takes. |
| Luca Guadagnino | Garfield recalled moving on after one or two takes on their project. |
Those contrasts illuminate how Garfield experiences collaboration: a director’s pace and the atmosphere on set affect the way a performance is made. His recollections should not be treated as a comprehensive account of any director’s methods across different productions.
