Ryan White’s documentary Come See Me in the Good Light follows poets Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley as they live with Gibson’s incurable ovarian cancer. Its humor does not make the illness—or the loss—less serious. Instead, it shows how laughter, intimacy and grief can exist together in the life the film records.

Gibson’s cancer diagnosis and treatment
Sundance reports that Gibson was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and initially given two years to live. They underwent chemotherapy and a radical hysterectomy; the cancer later returned. The film’s setting is therefore not a story about illness overcome, but a portrait made in the presence of a terminal diagnosis. Sundance’s account of the film describes the diagnosis and treatment.
Why the film can be funny without denying the sadness
The film’s humor belongs to the people and relationship it observes. It is not evidence that cancer was easy, that grief disappeared, or that everyone facing serious illness responds this way. Gibson told the Associated Press at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025, “I don’t think that they had any expectation that it would be fun.” The AP also quotes White describing how a moment can change register: “You never get that kind of stuff on Day One. But that scene turns from funny to deep real fast.” Those comments capture the tonal balance: laughter is part of the couple’s life, while mortality remains present. The Associated Press report includes both remarks.

How the filmmakers captured ordinary life
According to the AP, the crew visited Gibson and Falley about every three weeks and filmed for three days on each visit. That recurring, multi-day approach let the documentary follow more than medical events: it could also attend to the couple’s shared routines and intimate moments. The film’s emotional range comes from holding that everyday life alongside treatment and the knowledge of what was ahead.
How the project began—and what the film meant to Gibson
Sundance reports that Gibson and Falley agreed to the project after Tig Notaro and producer Stef Willen pitched it in 2023. The AP later reported that Gibson died in July 2025, aged 49, and that the film had given them a record of their life with Falley. Seen in that light, the documentary is not only an account of dying; it also preserves a relationship and the ordinary, funny, difficult moments that made up the life being filmed.
