Why was Andre Rebelo charged?
Police charged Rebelo with murder in November 2022. At the time, police had not publicly confirmed the cause of death or whether there were visible injuries. The charge was an allegation; the later jury verdict established his guilt.
The prosecution argued that Rebelo killed his mother to claim life-insurance proceeds. What happened to his appeal?
ABC reported in September 2025 that Rebelo planned to appeal. Its account summarized defence arguments challenging the evidence and suggesting a natural cause of death. Those were defence arguments, not a change to the jury’s verdict.
The West Australian reported on September 16, 2026, that Rebelo withdrew his appeal shortly before its scheduled hearing. The report said the reason was unclear.
