CID investigator Sivanandan has solved the murder of radio engineer Rajan and asks the suspects to aim their loaded guns at him to test his explanation. The still became a meme in August 2017, when captions turned the tableau into a comic image of collective reactions to everyday situations. The documented wave dates to 2017; available reporting does not establish that the meme is trending again in 2026.
What is the scene behind the meme?
The image strips away the scene’s crucial context. Sivanandan, the CID investigator, has pieced together the case and asks the suspects to point their guns at him. The test puts his account to the proof: the guns are loaded, and the scene’s threat is real within the story. Without that setup, the image reads like a group aiming at an unseen person or reacting in unison.
In the meme versions reproduced by Scroll, captions recast the moment as a shared response to familiar situations: colleagues confronting someone who offers overtime, people reacting to someone picking up books, or relatives facing a refusal to marry. The contrast is the joke: an intensely staged thriller image is made to stand in for ordinary social pressure.
What is Andha Naal about?
Andha Naal is a 1954 Tamil-language, black-and-white crime thriller directed by S. Balachander and produced by AVM Studios. Its central mystery begins with Rajan, a radio engineer, found shot dead. Sivanandan investigates by hearing accounts from Rajan’s family and a neighbour; each account shifts suspicion and reframes what the viewer thinks happened.

The film’s final explanation connects Rajan to selling Indian military secrets to Japan. Usha, his wife, tries to change his course. The story is set against the Japanese bombing of Madras during the Second World War, as described in the FIAF workshop programme.
How does the film tell its story?
The investigation unfolds through competing perspectives and subjective flashbacks rather than a single, settled account. That structure makes each testimony part of the suspense: viewers must weigh not only what a character says, but what the film shows through that character’s version of events. Scroll discusses the film’s red herrings, MacGuffins, close-ups, chiaroscuro lighting and editing as elements of its thriller craft.

The FIAF programme describes Andha Naal as entirely without song and dance and highlights its shifting perspectives. Its 130-minute running time and credits for cinematographer S. Maruti Rao and screenplay and dialogue writer Javar Seetharaman are also listed in the programme. Rather than treating the meme still as evidence of accidental comedy, it helps to see it as one fragment of a deliberately constructed police procedural.
Is Andha Naal based on Rashomon?
The film is often discussed alongside Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon (1950) because both are associated with conflicting perspectives. Scroll also notes a comparison made by film historians with the British mystery The Woman in Question (1950). Those comparisons do not establish that Andha Naal is a remake or direct adaptation.

The News Minute reproduced Kamal Haasan’s observation that the film is reminiscent of Rashomon, but should not simply be called a take on it. The distinction matters: resemblance in a narrative device is not the same as proof of direct borrowing.
When did the meme circulate, and what was the film’s reception?
Scroll reproduces meme posts dated August 17–19, 2017, and The News Minute’s article about the viral image appeared on August 25, 2017. That reporting supports describing the image as a 2017 viral meme; it does not document a new wave in 2026.

The film’s reception also changed over time. The FIAF programme says it received the 1955 National Award for Second Best Feature Film in Tamil, was re-released afterward and later attained cult status. It describes the film as an often-cited early example of Tamil noir. Its modern meme life is one afterlife of the film, but not a substitute for its place as a formally distinctive thriller.
