Anderson Cooper was struck by flying debris while reporting live for CNN from Bradenton, Florida, during Hurricane Milton coverage on October 10, 2024. CNN anchor Laura Coates identified the material as Styrofoam; the reviewed transcript does not say where it came from or establish whether Cooper was injured.

What hit Anderson Cooper during the live report?

Cooper was reporting on the storm when he reacted, “That wasn’t good.” Coates then identified what had hit him as Styrofoam. CNN’s transcript of Laura Coates Live records the exchange and places Cooper in Bradenton, Florida.

The transcript is labeled a “RUSH TRANSCRIPT” and warns that it may not be final or may be updated. The reported identification of Styrofoam is therefore attributed to Coates on air; the transcript does not establish the piece’s origin, size, or speed, or confirm an injury.

What was happening around the incident?

The moment occurred amid live coverage of dangerous wind, flooding, rising water, and debris as Milton affected Florida. CNN’s October 9 broadcast transcript documents storm conditions and includes meteorologist Chad Myers warning viewers not to assume the danger had passed or go outside simply because conditions seemed to ease.

What does the clip establish—and what does it not?

  • Established in CNN’s broadcast account: Cooper was reporting from Bradenton during Hurricane Milton coverage, and Coates identified the debris as Styrofoam.
  • Not established by the reviewed transcript: where the material came from, its size or speed, or whether Cooper was injured.
  • Not a basis for broader claims: the clip alone does not show that CNN deliberately exposed Cooper to the impact or establish the network’s wider reporting-safety practices.
