Later broadcasts and Cohen’s comments about the 2025–26 edition show the hosts drinking—or planning to drink—again, but the available evidence does not establish a permanent CNN-wide policy change.
What changed on CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast
The clearest account is a change in what Cooper and Cohen did on their annual New Year’s Eve show: they used non-alcoholic shots during the 2022–23 broadcast, then resumed tequila toasts on the 2023–24 edition. CNN subsequently announced the pair as co-hosts for the 2024–25 show, whose transcript includes Cooper referring to alcohol as part of the night. Before the 2025–26 edition, Cohen said that he and Cooper would drink.
That sequence supports a limited conclusion: the restriction reported for one broadcast did not keep the hosts from returning to alcoholic toasts in later editions. It does not, by itself, show that CNN formally ended a network-wide alcohol policy or adopted a permanent rule permitting on-air drinking.
How the broadcasts unfolded
2022–23: non-alcoholic shots
For the 2022–23 New Year’s Eve broadcast, CNN restricted Cooper and Cohen from drinking alcohol on air. Contemporary reporting said they used non-alcoholic shots, including pickle juice. Coverage connected the restriction to concerns about on-air drinking and the network’s image, but there is no direct statement from CNN’s then-chief executive in the available evidence explaining the decision. That distinction matters: the restriction is reported, while the explanation should not be presented as an official CNN rationale. The Independent’s account of the 2022–23 broadcast describes the restriction and the hosts’ non-alcoholic alternatives.

2023–24: tequila toasts return
On the next edition, Cooper and Cohen toasted with tequila. Cohen brought tequila and shot glasses, and the two joked about whether Cooper could drink responsibly. Us Weekly’s report on the 2023–24 show records the exchange. The Independent reported Cooper asking, “Can Daddy get his juice responsibly?” after Cohen asked whether “Daddy” could get his “juice.” Those lines were broadcast banter, not an announcement about CNN policy.
2024–25: CNN confirms the hosts’ return
On December 6, 2024, CNN announced that Cooper and Cohen would co-host the network’s New Year’s Eve broadcast welcoming 2025. The announcement confirmed the hosting lineup; it did not describe a general change to CNN’s alcohol rules. In the December 31 transcript, Cooper introduces the evening as “a night of music, comedy, alcohol and mayhem.” That remark documents how he described that particular show, not a formal policy statement. CNN’s press announcement and the transcript of the December 31 broadcast establish those points.

2025–26: Cohen describes the plan
Before the 2025–26 broadcast, Cohen said that he and Cooper would drink. That is evidence of what Cohen said they planned for their show, not proof that a permanent CNN rule had changed. The statement also should not be stretched into a claim about what occurred during the broadcast: a pre-show comment and a record of what aired are different kinds of evidence. The Daily Beast’s report covers Cohen’s statement.
Why “CNN relaxes its alcohol ban” needs context
The phrase “alcohol ban” can sound like a standing rule across CNN. The documented episode is narrower: reporting described an on-air restriction affecting Cooper and Cohen’s 2022–23 New Year’s Eve broadcast. Later tequila toasts and references to alcohol show that the restriction did not continue to define every subsequent edition of their show.

There is no named official quote in the available coverage explaining a formal reversal, and none of the cited material establishes a permanent CNN-wide policy. The most accurate description is that the hosts returned to drinking on later New Year’s Eve broadcasts after a reported restriction on the 2022–23 edition. Their on-air jokes, a host’s remarks, and CNN’s confirmation of the hosting lineup each tell readers something about the show, but none substitutes for a network policy announcement.

- Established: CNN restricted on-air alcohol consumption for the 2022–23 New Year’s Eve broadcast, and the hosts used non-alcoholic shots.
- Established: Cooper and Cohen resumed tequila toasts on the 2023–24 edition.
- Established: CNN named them as co-hosts for the 2024–25 broadcast, and its December 31 transcript records Cooper mentioning alcohol.
- Established: Before the 2025–26 edition, Cohen said that he and Cooper would drink.
- Not established: A permanent CNN-wide policy change, an official explanation of the original restriction from the network’s then-chief executive, or an outcome for the 2025–26 show based solely on Cohen’s pre-show comment.
So the headline’s basic point—that Cooper and Cohen were again able to drink on their New Year’s Eve show—fits the later broadcast record. The broader implication that CNN formally lifted a lasting network-wide ban goes beyond what these sources show.
