Andaz Apna Apna is a 1994 Hindi comedy about two boastful young men whose contest to marry a wealthy heiress spirals into an inheritance-and-identity caper. Its pleasures are the rivalry between Amar and Prem, the theatrical ensemble performances and a steady escalation of comic complications; its length and broad style will not suit every viewer.
What is Andaz Apna Apna about?
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film follows Amar (Aamir Khan) and Prem (Salman Khan), two poor schemers with grand ambitions and little prospect of achieving them. Both pursue Raveena (Raveena Tandon), the daughter of wealthy Ram Gopal Bajaj. What begins as a rivalry for her attention grows into a farce of mistaken identities and competing schemes when Teja (Paresh Rawal) targets the family fortune. Karisma Kapoor plays Karisma, Raveena’s friend. Apple TV’s US catalog listing describes Rawal in a double role; its synopsis calls the villain Teja.
What makes the comedy work?
Amar and Prem’s rivalry
The central comic engine is the pair’s mutual competition. Each wants to look clever, successful and deserving of Raveena, but their boasting and opportunism repeatedly get in each other’s way. The rivalry gives the film a recurring source of friction even as the plot expands beyond the courtship contest.
An ensemble that enlarges the farce
Teja’s plan brings an inheritance scheme and questions of identity into the story, while a crowded supporting cast adds more exaggerated personalities and complications. Shakti Kapoor plays Crime Master Gogo, Deven Verma is Murli Manohar, Jagdeep is Bankelal Bhopali, Viju Khote is Robert, and Shehzad Khan is Bhalla. The comic effect is less about restraint than accumulation: characters, reversals and verbal jokes keep layering onto the original rivalry.

Is it worth watching?
As a review judgment, Andaz Apna Apna is best approached as a broad, performance-led farce rather than a tightly plotted comedy. Its appeal lies in the contrast between Amar and Prem, flamboyant character work and the absurdity of their escalating predicament. Viewers who enjoy theatrical performances and verbal catchphrases may find that energy infectious. Those who prefer subtle humor or economical plotting may find the style too exaggerated and the reversals too convoluted.
The film is also a substantial commitment. Apple TV’s US catalog lists a runtime of 2 hours 33 minutes, Hindi audio and English subtitles. Google Play’s India listing gives 159 minutes and a CBFC U classification, so runtime and classification should be understood in the context of those specific regional catalog entries rather than assumed to apply identically to every version.
