Anatomy of a Fall is less a whodunit with a hidden answer than a courtroom drama about how an answer is assembled. After novelist Sandra’s husband, Samuel, is found dead outside their mountain home, the trial weighs murder against suicide while exposing the strained marriage behind the case. It asks “Did she do it?” without making certainty the point: evidence matters, but so do the stories people build from partial memories and competing interpretations.
What is Anatomy of a Fall about?
Directed by Justine Triet and co-written with Arthur Harari, the 2023 film follows Sandra, a novelist living with Samuel and their visually impaired son. Samuel is found dead after a fall from the family home. Investigators consider whether he was murdered or died by suicide, and Sandra becomes the principal suspect. As the case proceeds, the courtroom examines not only the circumstances of his death but the couple’s history.

NEON lists Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud and Milo Machado Graner among the cast, and records the film’s 2023 Cannes Palme d’Or and Academy Award for Original Screenplay. Why does the trial feel like a dissection of the marriage?
Triet uses procedure to make domestic life public. At the Festival de Cannes, she said, “I wanted to make another film about the relationship between men and women, this time exploring how a couple falls apart.” She described the trial as a methodical examination of the couple’s past, with their son caught in the position of learning about his parents through testimony. The Cannes interview connects the legal form to that intimate subject.

That structure makes arguments and recollections do double duty. A detail can be relevant to the case while also suggesting how the spouses treated one another, divided responsibilities or understood their shared life. The Associated Press notes that Triet and Harari draw on courtroom conventions such as expert witnesses and cross-examinations to explore the subjectivity of memory and relationships. The film’s legal question therefore cannot be cleanly separated from the emotional one: what can anyone reliably know about a marriage from the fragments exposed after a death? The Associated Press interview and report.
Does the film answer “Did she do it?”
No definitive answer is established for the audience. The trial considers whether Samuel fell, was pushed or died by suicide, but the film preserves uncertainty rather than revealing a conclusive explanation. That restraint shifts attention from solving the case to examining how evidence is selected, framed and made persuasive.

Hüller described her approach to Sandra this way: “I decided to believe her. I decided to play her as someone who’s telling the truth, even if it’s just that she believes she’s telling the truth.” The Associated Press. The performance does not settle the allegation; instead, it allows Sandra to be credible in her own account while leaving room for the audience to imagine the accusation could be true.
What is the film saying about evidence and belief?
The case is built from material that does not interpret itself. Testimony, expert analysis and intimate recollection acquire meaning as lawyers and witnesses arrange them into accounts. The Guardian’s review argues that the film shows how marital history can be selectively assembled to serve a prosecution narrative, while other memories may suggest another picture. It also reads the case through gender expectations: Sandra’s manner and her failure to perform a conventional image of victimhood can influence how others judge her. These are critical interpretations, not a definitive account of what the film proves. The Guardian review.

The presence of the couple’s son gives that uncertainty a family consequence. He is not simply watching a legal contest; he is drawn into the court’s reconstruction of his parents and must encounter their private conflicts as public evidence. Triet told Cannes she wanted “a little boy who finds out about his parents’ business in a trial that methodically dissects the couple’s history.” Festival de Cannes interview.
How effective is it as a courtroom drama?
Its strength is the tension between procedural order and emotional instability. The formal process keeps asking for an account that can be tested, while the relationship at its center resists being reduced to a single, objective story. As a result, the trial advances the mystery and exposes the limits of what a trial—or an audience—can infer from the past.
Rank #4
The film is best approached as dramatic use of courtroom procedure, not as a definitive guide to French criminal law. Its focus is the way a case can turn memory and private behavior into arguments. The Guardian describes the lingering doubt as part of the film’s appeal; for viewers who want a mystery resolved beyond reasonable ambiguity, that same openness may feel frustrating.

For viewers drawn to morally unsettled dramas, performances shaped by ambiguity and stories about how people interpret one another, yes. The film rewards attention to how evidence is narrated as much as to what evidence appears. It is less satisfying if the main aim is a final reveal that settles Samuel’s death, because it leaves that central question open.
