Spoilers for the full film. The film never proves Daniel is lying. In court, he says he believes his father died by suicide, but the belief comes from Daniel’s reading of an earlier family memory—not from decisive new evidence about Samuel’s fatal fall. Daniel may be sincere, mistaken, protective, or deliberately reshaping what he remembers. The ending leaves that private truth unresolved.
What Daniel’s testimony establishes—and what it doesn’t
Anatomy of a Fall, Justine Triet’s 2023 French film, frames Samuel’s death as an unresolved question: suicide or homicide. The Festival de Cannes synopsis places Daniel at his mother’s trial amid that uncertainty. The trial assembles testimony, recordings, arguments, and forensic interpretations, but it cannot turn the family’s fractured memories into an omniscient account of Samuel’s final moments. Festival de Cannes film record
Daniel’s testimony matters to the trial, but it is not presented as objective proof. The film does not confirm his recollection with a flashback that certifies what happened. His words tell us what he says he believes; they do not settle whether that belief is accurate or whether he has consciously chosen a story that protects his mother.
Why the aspirin and Snoop memory matters
Before testifying, Daniel revisits an earlier episode in which Samuel became ill after taking too much aspirin and Snoop was also sick. In the screenplay, Sandra explains the aspirin episode, and Daniel tests his memory against what happened to the dog. That recollection gives Daniel a concrete reason to reconsider Sandra’s account and accept the possibility that Samuel took his own life. Screenplay text hosted by ScriptSlug

But the memory cannot establish what happened during the fatal fall. Its importance is personal and interpretive: it changes what Daniel thinks is plausible. The film leaves room for him to be remembering accurately, reconstructing events, or drawing a conclusion that feels necessary under pressure.
Three readings of Daniel’s choice
He believes what he tells the court
This is the most direct reading of Daniel’s testimony. The aspirin and Snoop episode gives him a reason to believe the suicide account, and the film does not expose him as knowingly false. Sincerity, however, does not guarantee that his memory or inference is correct.

He is protecting his mother
Daniel is a child caught between his dead father and the surviving parent on whom he depends. His testimony may be shaped by love, dependence, or a desire to keep his remaining family together. That interpretation fits the emotional stakes, but the film does not show Daniel admitting to a conscious lie.
He is lying or reshaping his memory
The timing and consequences of Daniel’s testimony make this reading possible: he could select or alter a memory to help Sandra. Yet no scene or source confirms that he does so. Calling his testimony a proven lie turns an interpretation into a reveal the film never supplies.

What the ending resolves
Sandra is acquitted, resolving the legal outcome within the story. It does not give the audience a definitive answer about whether she killed Samuel. The distinction matters: a verdict is a judgment reached in court, not an authoritative reconstruction of the death.
The final quiet image of Sandra and Daniel together offers emotional closure in their relationship, with Snoop present as a sign of continuity. It does not prove Daniel lied or establish Sandra’s innocence. The family remains connected even as the factual mystery stays open.

Why the film keeps Daniel uncertain
Triet has described the film as an exploration of a couple’s breakdown and a child learning about his parents’ private history through a trial. She said the filmmakers wanted Milo Machado-Graner to experience Daniel’s uncertainty; during the shoot, he kept asking them, “So did she do it?” Festival de Cannes interview
That uncertainty is part of the film’s design, not a puzzle with a hidden official solution. In an Associated Press interview, Sandra Hüller described her approach to playing Sandra: “I decided to believe her. I decided to play her as someone who’s telling the truth, even if it’s just that she believes she’s telling the truth. At the same time, I wanted her to be someone whom I could think capable of doing such a thing.” That is Hüller’s performance choice, not evidence that the character is guilty or innocent. Triet has also described language as central to the film, saying, “Language is the core of the movie … It’s a metaphor for the couple, how they are not able to understand each other.” The courtroom cannot simply recover one stable version of a marriage when the people who lived it experienced and remember it differently. ABC News interview
Triet’s production notes likewise discuss images of ascent and descent and the couple’s struggle over trust and reciprocity. Those themes deepen the film’s relationship story, but they do not function as a ruling on who caused Samuel’s death. mk2 Films production notes
