Ananda Lewis, the television host who became a familiar face on BET and MTV, died at 52 after living with breast cancer, The Associated Press reported on June 12, 2025. Her sister, Lakshmi Emory, confirmed her death in a Facebook post, according to the AP.
From BET’s Teen Summit to MTV
Lewis first made her name hosting BET’s Teen Summit, a program focused on issues facing Black youth and featuring community leaders, entertainers and politicians, the AP reported. Her move to MTV in 1997 brought her to a much larger audience.

At MTV, she hosted MTV Live, Hot Zone and the daily music-video countdown Total Request Live. She later hosted The Ananda Lewis Show, which lasted one season, and worked as a correspondent for The Insider, according to the AP.
In reflecting on her move from BET to MTV, Lewis described opportunity as something she wanted young people to pursue. “One of the main things we dealt with on a consistent basis, like the underlying theme of all the shows is you’ve got to get out there and live your life,” she told the AP. She added that she could not urge children to “be your best and take advantage of every opportunity” while refusing an opportunity herself.

Her publicly shared breast cancer journey
Lewis shared her breast cancer diagnosis publicly in 2020. The AP reported that it was initially Stage 3 and had advanced to Stage 4 by 2024. The Washington Post also reported her Stage 4 disclosure in 2024.
In an October 2024 interview, as reported by the Washington Post, Lewis discussed public backlash after she declined doctors’ advice to undergo a double mastectomy. That was her personal medical decision; reporting on it does not establish that it caused her death or explain her individual course of illness.

Lewis also spoke publicly about mammograms. The AP quoted her urging women not to postpone screening: “I need you to share this with the women in your life who may be as stubborn as I was about mammograms, and I need you to tell them that they have to do it,” she said. “Early detection, especially for breast cancer, changes your outcome. It can save their life.” Those were Lewis’s words of personal advocacy, not individualized medical guidance.
