Charlie Sheen has described his childhood as mostly ordinary, apart from traveling widely with his actor father. Later accounts of the family’s time in the Philippines during the making of Apocalypse Now portray a more difficult side. Together, those accounts show a childhood shaped by filmmaking, frequent travel and contrasting family experiences—not one simple explanation for his adult life.

Who were Charlie Sheen’s parents, and where did he grow up?

Sheen was born Carlos Irwin Estévez in New York City in 1965. His parents were actor Martin Sheen and Janet Templeton; his siblings are Ramon, Emilio and Renée, according to Biography.com.

The family’s life followed Martin Sheen’s acting work. In a 1993 interview with Us, Charlie said he went on location with his father and that the family traveled together. His recollection points to a childhood that included time in different places, rather than one hometown experience. The interview is available in a PDF archive.

What did Sheen say his childhood was like?

Sheen called it “pretty normal,” while distinguishing it from the unusual opportunity to see the world through his father’s location work. He said: “I had a pretty normal childhood, the only difference was I got to see a lot of the world because I went on location with the old man. He took the family with him, which is the reason that he and my mom stayed married.”

That is Sheen’s own description in 1993, not a neutral assessment of every part of his upbringing. Later reporting offers another perspective on a particular period of family life.

Did Charlie Sheen make movies as a child?

Early work in front of the camera

Biography.com reports that Sheen appeared as an extra at age nine in The Execution of Private Slovik, a 1974 television film directed by his father. The biographical account also notes that Sheen made short films as a teenager with friends including Rob Lowe and Sean Penn.

Home movies in Malibu

In an Associated Press interview about his memoir, Sheen recalled making home movies with neighborhood friends in Malibu, including Sean and Chris Penn. They used old cameras and props passed down by parents working in film and entertainment. “Everybody was surfing or skateboarding or doing other stuff and we just found a way to, just kind of emulate or mimic or copy what our parents were doing,” he said. AP reports that clips from the home movies appear in the two-part Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen. Read the Associated Press report.

Why did Charlie Sheen leave high school?

A 1991 Los Angeles Times profile reported that Sheen was asked to leave Santa Monica High School only weeks before graduation because he was cutting most of his classes. He said he had made a deal with his parents: “I made a deal with my parents that if I didn’t get an acting job, I’d return and get my high school degree and go on to college.” The article reports that he obtained acting work; Biography.com also describes his departure as an expulsion shortly before graduation. What do later accounts say about the family during Apocalypse Now?

Charlie was 11 and in the Philippines while Martin Sheen filmed Apocalypse Now, according to The Guardian’s 2013 profile. The Guardian attributed to Emilio Estevez an account of Martin Sheen drinking heavily and occasionally behaving violently during that period, and described the boys as underparented. Netflix Tudum also says the documentary addresses Martin Sheen’s addiction during production, which Charlie witnessed; see its interview about the documentary.

These are later accounts and attributed descriptions of a specific period. They should be kept distinct from Charlie’s 1993 recollection of a largely normal childhood and family travel; they do not establish a single cause for his later life.

Where can viewers see more of Sheen’s childhood story?

The documentary aka Charlie Sheen includes archival home-movie footage and addresses family history, according to AP and Netflix Tudum. Sheen’s memoir, The Book of Sheen, is a first-person account covering his life beginning with his birth, as AP reports; Biography.com also identifies it as his memoir. It extends beyond childhood, so it offers a broader personal account rather than a childhood-only history.
