In February 2024, Amy Schumer said she had been diagnosed with exogenous Cushing syndrome, which the interview account attributed to high-dose steroid injections. She described her case as one that would resolve. That explanation applies to her reported case; facial fullness alone cannot identify Cushing syndrome, and the sources cited here do not establish her current health status.
What Amy Schumer said about her face and diagnosis
On February 16, 2024, Schumer addressed public comments that her face looked “puffier than normal.” In a statement reported by ITV News, she acknowledged, “And you’re right it is puffier than normal right now.” She also wrote, “I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation.”
In a later interview with journalist Jessica Yellin for News Not Noise, Schumer said she had exogenous Cushing syndrome. Access Hollywood reported that her case was brought on by high-dose steroid injections. Schumer described the condition as one that would resolve and said, “So finding out I have the kind of Cushing that will just work itself out and I’m healthy was the greatest news imaginable.” This is her reported account of her diagnosis and prognosis, not a general prediction for other people with Cushing syndrome.
What is Cushing syndrome?
Cushing syndrome means the body is exposed to too much cortisol, a hormone. The excess may come from the body producing too much cortisol or from medicines that act like cortisol, including steroids used over time. The term describes a group of possible causes rather than one single disease with one standard treatment.

A round or full face can be one feature of Cushing syndrome, but it is not enough by itself to diagnose it. A change in appearance can have many explanations, and Schumer’s experience cannot establish the cause of a similar change in someone else.
What can cause Cushing syndrome?
The underlying cause matters because medication-related and internal causes require different evaluation and care.

Medication-related, or exogenous, Cushing syndrome
Exogenous Cushing syndrome results from exposure to medicines that act like cortisol. UVA Health endocrinologist Mary Lee Vance described prolonged steroid use as a common cause in a UVA Today interview. Schumer’s reported case was attributed to high-dose steroid injections; the cited reports do not identify why she received them or establish that the same circumstances apply to other patients.
Internal, or endogenous, causes
Cushing syndrome can also occur when the body itself produces too much cortisol. Sources may include the pituitary or adrenal glands. These causes are distinct from medication-related exposure, so a clinician needs to determine which pathway is involved before choosing treatment.

How is Cushing syndrome diagnosed?
Diagnosis involves clinical assessment and testing rather than judging appearance alone. Vance told UVA Today, “The diagnosis is based on clinical finds in blood, salivary and urine tests.” Which tests are appropriate depends on the person’s clinical findings and circumstances; the article does not provide a single self-test or result that readers can use to diagnose themselves.
How is it treated?
Treatment depends on what is causing the excess cortisol. Care for medication-related Cushing syndrome is not interchangeable with care for pituitary or adrenal causes, and Schumer’s reported expectation that her case would resolve should not be taken as a prognosis for others. Anyone concerned about symptoms or steroid exposure should discuss them with a health professional and should not stop or change prescribed medicines based on an article.

What Schumer’s disclosure can—and cannot—tell readers
Her February 2024 comments provide her account of a diagnosis and its reported cause. They do not make a “puffier” face a diagnostic sign on its own, establish a cause for another person’s appearance, or update Schumer’s health status today. The useful distinction is between a visible change that may prompt a question and the clinical assessment and testing needed to answer it.
