At the Saturday Night Live 50th-anniversary special, Amy Poehler asked Ryan Reynolds how he was doing. “Great. Why? What have you heard?” he replied, drawing laughter. The quick exchange gave the celebrity audience Q&A an unexpected turn before it moved back to questions about the show’s history.
What Ryan Reynolds said at the SNL50 Q&A
Poehler and Tina Fey, both former SNL cast members, led the audience questions. When Poehler invited people to speak, Reynolds stood and said, “I have a question.” Poehler greeted him: “Ryan Reynolds, how’s it going?” His answer — “Great. Why? What have you heard?” — was the moment that made the exchange take a turn.

The official SNL listing for “Audience Q&A – SNL50”, published February 16, 2025, identifies the segment as a celebrity-audience Q&A. CNN’s transcript records the exchange, and the Associated Press also quotes Reynolds’s reply.
Why the line drew attention
When the special aired, contemporary coverage connected Reynolds’s “What have you heard?” to the legal controversy involving his wife, Blake Lively, and her It Ends With Us co-star and director, Justin Baldoni. CNN, the AP and Variety framed the line as a joke about the news surrounding Reynolds’s appearance at the time. That was a contemporaneous reading of the gag, not a legal finding about the dispute.

Other questions in the celebrity audience
The Q&A also mixed show-business history with jokes about familiar SNL figures and sketches. Variety reported that one question turned to the Coneheads: Reynolds asked whether the material used for their distinctive heads was edible, and Fey and Poehler replied that it was almost certainly toxic.
Quinta Brunson asked former cast member Tim Meadows what he had said to Sade in a 1993 sketch. Peyton Manning asked when longtime producer Lorne Michaels would retire. Fey and Poehler answered “never”; Manning then joked that he wanted to reassure Michaels that “getting old sucks. I hate being retired.”
