Amrita Pritam was a Punjabi poet and fiction writer whose work also reached Hindi readers after Partition brought her to Delhi. Born in Gujranwala on 31 August 1919, she is remembered for writing about Partition’s violence and for bringing women’s experience into literature. Her 100th birth anniversary fell in 2019; that year, Sahitya Akademi and Punjabi Akademi, Delhi held a two-day national seminar in her memory.
Who was Amrita Pritam?
Pritam was born in Gujranwala, then part of undivided Punjab and now in Pakistan. Sahitya Akademi records her birth date as 31 August 1919 and describes her as a Punjabi poet and fiction writer who later also wrote in Hindi after moving to Delhi following Partition. The Akademi’s biography says: “Born on 31st August 1919 in Gujranwala (now in Pakistan), Amrita grew up writing poetry under the careful guidance of her scholarly father.” Sahitya Akademi’s biographical profile.
The Akademi characterizes her early collections as reflecting a traditional, ethical approach, while her later work opened toward protest and a more humanistic poetic space. That description points to a writer attentive to changing social conditions, rather than one whose work can be reduced to a single subject or period.
Why is her poetry linked to Partition?
Partition and its human cost form a central part of Pritam’s literary memory. Her poem Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu—“Today I call upon Waris Shah”—addresses the eighteenth-century Punjabi poet Waris Shah. DD News identifies it as a response to the massacres of 1947: the poem turns to a revered literary voice to express grief at the violence in Punjab. English transliterations of the title vary; this article follows the form used in the cited accounts. DD News’ account of Pritam.
