Amit Dutta’s films invite you to watch for their images as much as for their stories. Rather than relying on conventional plot progression, they make duration, visual rhythm, and painterly detail central to the experience. MUBI Notebook critic Mantra Mukim describes Dutta’s cinema as built around “the purely ocular movement of the eye,” where looking itself can create meaning. That’s an attributed critical reading, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the films immediately accessible.
MUBI held an India retrospective, The Inimitable Image: An Amit Dutta Retrospective, in 2020. That historical event does not establish that any Dutta films are currently streaming on MUBI India; check the India catalog for current availability.
What makes Amit Dutta’s films worth watching?
Dutta’s films often shift attention from what happens next to what the camera sees, how long it looks, and how images and sounds are arranged. Mukim writes about movement between rapid visual disturbances and extended stillness, describing a cinema that privileges looking over conventional narration or dramatization.
This approach can be rewarding if you enjoy films that ask you to notice atmosphere, composition, and shifts in visual attention. It can also feel challenging if you expect a clearly explained plot. Outlook’s April 9, 2026 interview characterizes Dutta’s work as complex and not easily comprehensible. Think of that as a useful expectation, not a reason to treat the films as puzzles with one correct interpretation.

Dutta’s MUBI profile offers a concise statement of the sensibility behind this attention to detail: “What is truly avant-garde? Giving due importance to the non-essential. For example, lengthening the duration of a random close-up. In one Indian miniature painting, I observed anew the painter withdrawing from the main narrative and painting the ‘insignificant’ squirrel with great love and care.” MUBI attributes the undated statement to Dutta.

Choose Nainsukh for art and visual detail
Nainsukh takes the life of an 18th-century Pahari painter as its subject. MUBI Notebook notes that Dutta collaborated with art historian Eberhard Fischer on research into Pahari miniature painting. The paintings’ detailed surfaces and visual logic inform the film, making it a natural starting point for viewers interested in how cinema can engage with art without simply illustrating it.
Choose Kramasha for memory and folklore
Kramasha, also known as To Be Continued, draws on childhood memory, family history, village lore, and fantasy. MUBI Notebook describes it as a short film of no more than 25 minutes, shot on 35mm. Its combination of remembered experience and local mythology offers a compact introduction to Dutta’s interest in images that do not settle into straightforward explanation.

Choose the other films for ambiguity or color
The Seventh Walk (2014) shares an interest in the life of an Indian painter and in color as a way of seeing. Aadmi ki Aurat aur Anya Kahaniya and Sonchidi are described by MUBI Notebook as moving through dreams, apparitions, and uncertain perception rather than conventional plot development. They suit viewers willing to follow shifts in mood and image without expecting every event to be clarified.

The listing does not, by itself, establish that the program or its constituent films are currently available to stream.

In an interview published April 9, 2026, Outlook frames Dutta’s career around the financing and distribution difficulties faced by independent cinema. Its summary characterizes his films as having appeared in festivals and museum programs rather than receiving commercial release in India. That is the interview’s account, not a verified claim about every title or any later streaming license. Dutta’s own observation in the interview is direct: “Capital shapes cinema because certain images can be realised only with sufficient money and resources.”
Outlook’s 2026 summary estimates that Dutta has made around 40 films; treat that as an approximate count, not a definitive filmography total. IFA’s profile also says he has written three books but does not name them.
