American Sniper does not show Chris Kyle being shot. The released film’s final sequence shows him leave for a gun range with Eddie Ray Routh, then cuts to Kyle’s funeral. In real life, Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were fatally shot at a Texas gun range on February 2, 2013. Routh was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
What happens at the end of American Sniper?
In the film’s last narrative sequence, Taya watches Chris leave for the range with Routh. The story then cuts to funeral material; the shooting itself is omitted. The film ends without showing the act of violence or depicting the full criminal case.
That cut leaves viewers with Taya at the moment of departure, while they understand what she does not yet know. One reasonable reading is that the ending keeps attention on the family’s loss rather than on the killer or the mechanics of the shooting. That interpretation is consistent with the sequence and with screenwriter Jason Hall’s explanation of the choice, but it is not the only possible reading.
Why does the film leave out Kyle’s death?
Hall said the filmmakers initially considered showing Kyle’s death and discussed different endings. He told The Guardian that Taya Kyle asked them to consider how such a scene might affect her children. Hall also said he did not want the depiction to glorify the person who killed Kyle or become the image the children carried of their father.

What happened to Chris Kyle in real life?
On February 2, 2013, Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield were fatally shot at a gun range in Texas. The film’s ending does not explain the complete circumstances of the event or the case that followed. The Associated Press reports that Eddie Ray Routh was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
The Department of Veterans Affairs says Kyle served ten years in the Navy, left honorably in 2009, and later worked with veterans. Its account identifies him as having been killed while at the range with other veterans.

How closely does the film follow the biography?
The 2014 film was directed by Clint Eastwood, starred Bradley Cooper, and was adapted from Kyle’s autobiography. The memoir is the film’s source, but an adaptation based on a memoir is not independent confirmation of every scene or detail.
TIME’s 2015 fact-check separates details it describes as factual, fictionalized, or unknown. For example, it notes that Kyle’s memoir does not mention Mustafa, the Iraqi sniper who figures in the film. That distinction matters: the movie’s dramatic choices should not automatically be read as documented biography.
