American Psycho does not give a definitive answer about whether every murder Patrick Bateman describes happened exactly as shown. Co-writer Guinevere Turner said the filmmakers wanted viewers to believe Bateman committed the violence, while also showing his perceptions becoming unreliable. Director Mary Harron has declined to settle the question. Paul Allen’s fate is deliberately uncertain: the film depicts Bateman attacking him, but Bateman’s lawyer later claims he encountered Allen.
What happens to Paul Allen?
Bateman kills Allen with an axe in Allen’s apartment after becoming jealous of Allen’s business card. The attack is shown on screen, and Bateman later claims in his confession that he killed Allen that way. Those scenes support a literal reading of the murder.
But the ending unsettles that account. Bateman’s lawyer says he encountered Allen, and the apartment appears to have been cleaned up. Neither detail proves that Allen survived or that Bateman imagined the killing. They leave the film without a reliable confirmation of Allen’s fate.
The uncertainty also fits a story in which people repeatedly confuse one another’s identities. That connection is an interpretation, not a definitive explanation supplied by the filmmakers.

How much of Bateman’s story was real?
The film invites more than one reading rather than confirming that the murders were all real or all imagined. Turner said the writers initially wanted to avoid an ending that revealed everything had been a dream or “in someone’s head.” Looking back, she said, “We really, really failed on that second one.” The ambiguity is in the finished film, even though it was not the writers’ original goal.
In a 2020 interview, Turner described an intended progression: the events begin as things viewers should take as real, then Bateman starts “perceiving things differently.” She still wanted viewers to think he had committed the violence. Harron has taken a more guarded position, saying, “I would never answer that.” Their comments offer context about intent, not a final ruling on what happened inside the story.

The scenes that mark a shift away from realism
Turner and Harron point to the ATM demanding that Bateman feed it a stray cat as a point where the film becomes less realistic. Turner also cites the police car that bursts into flames after Bateman shoots at it. These moments make it harder to treat every later event as straightforwardly literal, but they do not establish that earlier violence was imaginary.
Why the final confession does not resolve the mystery
Bateman leaves a message for his lawyer confessing to murder, then tries to explain himself in person. The lawyer’s response frustrates any hope of confirmation: he says he saw Allen, and he does not recognize Bateman as the person who left the confession.

Turner described the intended sting this way: “He cannot stand out for anyone, including his lawyer.” Bateman cannot make his crimes, his confession, or even his identity register with the person he needs to hear him. The lawyer’s claim complicates the account, but because the film has made recognition and identity so unstable, it does not settle Allen’s fate.

The final scene works whether Bateman’s violence is read as literal, distorted, or partly imagined. His confession does not deliver catharsis or dependable consequences. Instead, it leaves him trapped in a world where recognition is elusive.

Turner connects that failure to a culture obsessed with achievement and status, in which people become bland and interchangeable. The business-card rivalry with Allen makes the point concrete: a small difference in a status display helps trigger Bateman’s jealousy and the attack. The film’s satire targets consumer display and competition as well as Bateman himself.
American Psycho adapts Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, but the film makes its own choices in point of view and presentation. Its uncertainty should be read on the film’s terms, not treated as a puzzle with a confirmed solution hidden in the source material.
