What happened to Denise Huskins?
On March 23, 2015, Muller broke into the Vallejo, California, home Huskins shared with Quinn. According to federal prosecutors, he used a stun gun and a simulated firearm, bound and blindfolded both of them, and made them drink a sleep-inducing liquid. He then took Huskins in a car trunk to his residence in South Lake Tahoe.
Muller held Huskins for two days and emailed Quinn ransom demands totaling $17,000. No ransom was paid. Muller released Huskins in Huntington Beach on March 25, 2015, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.
How did investigators identify Muller?
A separate burglary investigation led to him
The breakthrough did not come from an early resolution of the Vallejo investigation. In June 2015, Dublin Police Services arrested Muller while investigating a separate home-invasion burglary. A search of his South Lake Tahoe residence turned up evidence connected to the Vallejo kidnapping, federal prosecutors said.

A Vallejo officer also found a storage locker containing aerial drones referenced in emails Muller had sent to a reporter. FBI analysis of Muller’s computers found recordings made to simulate multiple people, as well as video showing Huskins blindfolded and under his control, according to federal court summaries released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
What happened to Matthew Muller in court?
Federal kidnapping case
Muller pleaded guilty to federal kidnapping in September 2016. In March 2017, he received a 40-year federal prison sentence, announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.

Later cases involving sexual assaults
In 2022, Muller pleaded guilty in a California state case involving sexual assaults of Huskins, according to a 2025 account from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
Separate 2009 home-invasion sexual assaults were charged in 2024 after DNA testing found Muller’s DNA on binding straps, prosecutors said. In January 2025, he pleaded guilty to two felony counts of committing sexual assault during a home invasion. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced in March 2025 that he had received a life sentence for those two assaults.

The same March 2025 announcement said Muller also faced kidnapping-for-ransom charges in Contra Costa County. The sources available here do not establish the final disposition of those charges.
Why did police call the kidnapping a hoax?
Vallejo police initially said they had found no evidence of a kidnapping and publicly accused Huskins and Quinn of staging the abduction. The Associated Press reported that a police spokesperson said investigators could not substantiate the couple’s claims, while Huskins and Quinn maintained they were victims. Muller’s identification, his federal guilty plea and the evidence in the case established that the kidnapping was real.

The couple sued the city and police department. The City of Vallejo settled the case for $2.5 million in 2018, according to AP reporting. AP also reported that the city and department apologized to Huskins and Quinn in 2021.

The federal sentence means Muller was sentenced to prison, but a current prison location is not established here. An official source in 2024 said he was incarcerated in a federal prison in Tucson; the later Santa Clara County announcement from March 2025 does not verify whether that location had changed.
How does the documentary relate to the victims’ account?
American Nightmare is a Netflix docuseries about the case. For a first-person account, Huskins and Quinn published Victim F: From Crime Victims to Suspects to Survivors in 2021. The book is their account of the ordeal; it is distinct from the official court record and news reporting.
